Letter to the Editor: Destroying the world is our new religion

Global warming, climate change or whatever you wish to call it is the new religion of the 21st century. I call it a religion––and a radical one at that––because it is so dogmatic and vilifies anyone with a dissenting view, including some scientists. To say that the science is settled is untrue. While the majority take the conventional view, others question the validity of the climate models.

Whenever someone says to me the science is settled; my radar goes up because I can recall many instances where science has told us one thing only to reverse itself. One typical example is cholesterol. In the 1970’s and 80’s, it was all bad, and we had a whole group of pharmaceuticals created to combat this. Fast forward to today and we find that the science was to be polite; inaccurate. Back in the 1970’s a few scientists urged caution about the cholesterol issue, but few listened. We now know that many people have been adversely affected by statins – cholesterol lowering drugs.

If we look at the proponents of the climate change issue, let’s see if they walk their talk. At the recent Paris conference of climate change, it was estimated that the attendees emitted approximately 300,000 tons of CO2 travelling back and forth from the conference. Have they not heard of conference calls or the internet? I am sure they could justify it, but then they want us to pay more in the form of carbon taxes. Al Gore, the big mover and shaker behind this whole political movement, flies in his private jet to places as far away as Australia burning CO2. Why not, the industry has made him a couple of hundred million dollars. We don’t see these climate change supporters restricting their lifestyle.

There is a solution that I do not hear anyone speak about, and that is… population control. How are you going to restrict the amount of CO2 – if you believe that catastrophe is around the corner – if you do not control planet earth’s population? The largest growth is in Third World Countries. For many living in these countries, electricity is a luxury. How can we deny that and future economic development?

We must be very wary because as Lord Kelvin said in 1900, “There is nothing new to be discovered in physics now. All that remains is more and more precise measurement”. I suggest caution is the way to go, not extreme radical measures that will ultimately harm more people worldwide.
