Today’s a day for celebrating being a ‘spunky old broad’

Today is Spunky Old Broads Day

There seems to be an international day for just about everything these days, but today is one that might interest you and get you celebrating.

February 1 is Spunky Old Broads Day, a day for celebrating being a spunky and sassy older woman!

But where does the term come from?

We all know that spunky is just another word for groovy or cool or sassy, but the term old broad is one from a long-gone era.

Back in the good old days, women were called broads because their hips were wider than mens.

So, a spunky old broad really is just a really cool, sassy older woman – a cool grandma – and we know there are plenty of you here at Starts at 60.

You’ve probably never heard of Spunky Old Broads day, but there are some people who have.

The Houston Chronicle over in the US describes it as a day to “celebrate older women for all their courage, wisdom and vivacity.”

It uses a couple of quotes from spunky old broads that are absolutely hilarious including this one by Betty White’s Golden Girls character Rose:

“The older you get, the better you get. Unless you’re a banana.”

or this one by women’s rights activist Gloria Steinem:

“Women may be the one group that grows more radical with age.”

So to all the groovy grannies and sassy older ladies, have a happy Spunky Old Broads Day!

Would you describe yourself as a spunky old broad? Who would you describe as a spunky old broad?
