This touching Danish video is stirring up controversy

The Danish sure know how to make a provocative video.
The advert has stirred up plenty of debate.

A new ad for a Danish television station is doing the rounds and while it’s bringing a tear to the eye of some, not everyone is happy.

The emotional ad sees around 80 people pulled into a big room and divided up into groups with their friends. They’re distinguished as “The High Earners” and “Those Just Getting By”; “Those We Trust” and “Those We Try To Avoid”.

Standing apart, they all look different and as though they would have absolutely nothing in common with each other.

A man with a clipboard then starts asking them questions, like “Who are stepparents?”, “Who is in love?” and “Who in this room was the class clown?”.

The people start to peel off from their original groups and form new ones based on the things they have in common; the things they never would have thought a total stranger from somewhere else could relate to.

The powerful message is meant to show us how similar we all really are and drive home the point that many of us have more in common with each other than we’d think.

It’s being hailed as one of the most poignant videos out there right now, especially following the extraordinary move on immigration by US president Donald Trump last week.

While many are calling it beautiful and touching others have branded it “Liberal bull” and say multiculturalism around the world as failed.

Take a look and tell us what you think and how it makes you feel.

Share if you think it’s an important message for the world right now.

Do you like the message here? Should we focus more on what we have in common than our differences?

Yep, watched the video … mindless twaddle.

A very interesting experiment. It shows how alike we are.

  2. Sandra-Leigh

Very realistic, thought-provoking and heart-tugging. Thank you for posting this video.

  3. LD

Interesting but not really honest, I find it hard to believe in that large a group especially in Denmark there is only one bi-sexual person.

  4. Sandi

Thought provoking so achieved its aim!

  5. Penny Adams

An interesting experiment that shows just how alike we are.

What is there not to like? Well done Danes……….this is applicable around the world, as the world ‘get’s smaller’ and communities become more diverse. Our problems exist when we allow ultra conservative, regressive leadership to ‘dictate’ Same sex marriage is a case in point. Why should politicians of any ‘colour’ have any right to stop two people in love from marrying, anywhere?

Affirms reality as I know it. I have lived all over the US and UK. Lived with people at all income levels and from all walks of life. And everywhere and always, I’ve found that they are just people trying to do the best they can for themselves and their families, just trying to get along with those around them.

Wow! As a US citizen what we are going through now, this could not be more relevant! Wish we could show this video during the Super Bowl. I must say regarding another commenter, I love the word “twaddle”? but this video is anything but, very thought provoking and moving. Love it.
