Susan Ley has been under fire of spending.

Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley has announced she will step aside after admitting to purchasing property and partying on New Year’s Eve while on taxpayer-funded trips.

Ms Ley has not officially resigned, but has instead decided to step aside while an investigation into her travel allowances is conducted.

In a statement read out in front of media this morning, she said she will “stand aside without ministerial pay” during an investigation by the Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

She first came under fire over the weekend when it was revealed she had bought a luxury apartment during a trip to the Gold Coast for work in 2015.

Ms Ley said the purchase was done “on a whim” and that she had not travelled to the Coast intending to buy to nearly $800,000 apartment.

However, voters have been lashing out at her ever since with many calling for her to stand down.

Following those revelations, Ms Ley was also found to have charged taxpayers for her flights to the Gold Coast where she celebrated New Year’s Eve in 2013 and 2014.

The whole ordeal is similar to other cases where politicians have been found to be abusing their position of power by charging taxpayers for their own personal gain.

There was nation-wide outrage at Bronwyn Bishop and Barnaby Joyce after they chartered expensive flights and footed voters with the bill and we’ve seen a number of other cases just like them over the years.

So when will our politicians learn?

Ms Ley has indicated she doesn’t think she has done anything wrong as she did conduct official ministerial work while on those trips. So does she have a point?

Some are saying the rules around politicians’ spending are too strict, with many saying it’s ridiculous to assume they can’t do anything besides work when they are on a trip away.

Others though say that given the amount of benefits they get they should know better and keep work and their personal lives separate since taxpayers are forking out for it.

What do you think?

Should Sussan Ley resign over this? Or is this being blown out of proportion?

  1. Resign. This government has been slashing incomes of the lower paid and reducing benefits.
How can People in power justify their actions.
They should be above any suspicion.
In the corporate world it is called fraud.
To ministers they call it multi tasking.

    IT IS FRAUD……..RESIGN IMMEDIATELY.

    • Lib

Yep, resign or charge her with fraud for her taxpayers funded trips, one rule for them, it is all ok to screw taxpayers and pensioners!

      • Marilyn Wilmington

I cannot believe these people are so stupid if they believe they will get away with it.

        • tasman

I think most would get away with it if the truth be known.

    • Owen french

What about our PM, claims $273/night for accomadation in Canberra & stays in a unit owned by his wife.

  2. Meryl

Yes, absolutely she should resign. No-one buys an $800,000 apartment “on a whim” … there are title searches, leins, building inspections etc., which have to be carried out prior to purchase.

  3. Hans

Yes She should resign, there is no justification to spend this sort of money. Her trip to the USA would have paid my meaner pension for over 4 years. When politicians tell us to tighten our belts they should do the same, because entitlements are there does not mean they have to the used to the limit, use them sensible and set a good example.

    • ALBERT MAHLBERG

WELL IT IS NO USE TELLING ALL THE POLLIES TO TIGHTEN THERE BELTS AS IF YOU HAVE NOT NOTICED ALL THE MEN WEAR BRASSES AND EVEN THOUGHT THE FEMALES THERE DO WEAR PANT OR MAYBE NOT THEY STILL DONT USE BELTS
YOU KNOW IF YOU WERE ON A BUSSINESS TRIP YOU PAID FOR EVERYTHING AND WHEN YOU GOT BACK YOU HAD TO SUBMIT YOUR OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES AND THEY WOULD ASSESS IT AND THEN PAY YOU WHAT YOU WERE ENTITLED TO
HAHAHAHA CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW SUSAN LEY WOULD HAVE FUNDED THE AMERICAN TRIP IF THAT WAS WHAT SHE HAD TO DO LOL

  4. Lib

Yes definite sack her or charge her with fraud for her taxpayers funded trips, one rule for them, it is all ok for them though to screw us taxpayers and pensioners who have worked hard all our lives!

  5. Mrs. Puddles

Taxpayers abhor ‘snout’s in the trough’ claims. But – if Ley stands down, let every other Politician who has ‘behaved in a similar manner’ irrespective of party – do the same thing. Very soon we would probably have no Parliament at all. Both sides, given press reports on the issue, are flogging the daylights out of ‘travel etc perks
‘ when staying in their own ‘properties’ in Canberra, but live elsewhere. Call it by any other name – but ‘rort’ resounds with most taxpayers.

  6. marina phillips

yes she should resign it goes on and on it has to stop, live like the rest of us do pensioners live on a budget i think i will change my vote next time i get sick of all these free trips , entertainment etc etc

  7. marilyn flynn

yes she should go, but you notice none of them are in a hurry to change any of these “entitlements” or generous pension schemes. Its on the agenda but they just keep putting it off.
    when will they learn.

  8. Margaret Buckle

Yes she should resign. The part I find abhorrent is that she still doesnt think she has done anything wrong. I am a pensioner who has lost some oension because I saved my money..didnt have tatts, smokes, trios overseas, planned my family amd paid for their teeth and education….just saved for my retirement .

  9. Ray Harvey

What about the $10,000 per day sojourn to the USA she took, in addition to her Gold Coast trips? Where’s the code of conduct discipline or ethics here? Some people in power get to assume that as they are in high office, they are above these areas and the appropriate policies and procedures of government. How many other such instances involving this woman and others have gone undetected? It’s only when they are caught out do they try to justify the unjustifiable. Big fat Joe Hockey told us that “the age of entitlement was over”. Well it appears his fellow politicians think that’s only for us minions and not them. This of course is in the context of he himself (Hockey) sitting in a politically appointed job in the USA, where he now continues to double dip. It’s good Ms. Ley has “stepped aside”. However, she should be sacked from the Ministry at least and Malcolm Turnbull should be ousted as well, as he continues to show his total lack of, discipline, judgement, leadership, accountability to the public and ethics.

  10. Vicki Wolstencroft

RESIGN! The age of entitlement is over!

  11. Mary

I totally agree with the opinion that politicians should be accountable for their spending. We are still financing all these past members even though many of them have very well paid jobs. Compared to Pensioners they are living in the lap of luxury and are set to for many years yet. There is so much talk about it and so much anger BUT WHEN WILL SOMEONE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT???

  12. Bruce

Why did she even have to go to the Gold Coast just to make an announcement anyway, she could have just issued a press release in Canberra instead of wasting more of our taxes on dubious junkets. She should be sacked immediately for insulting our intelligence expecting us to believe people buy $800,000 flats on a “whim” especially from Liberal party donors.
