Push for change after final US election voting results revealed

Donald Trump has officially been voted the president of the United States.

So you might be wondering why everyone is still talking about the US election then?

Well, the official full voting results have been released and it looks like the result wasn’t as you’d assume.

CNN reports that Hillary Clinton ended up with nearly 3 million (2.1%) more votes than Donald Trump.

But because of the way the electoral college system works in the US, it was Trump who emerged the winner.

It turns out that Clinton is one of only a handful of candidates to ever lose the election, despite getting more votes than her opponent.

In fact, more people voted for Clinton than they voted for Obama in the 2012 election.

The results, which were as many political observers expected, have some Americans asking – why shouldn’t the person with the most votes be the winner?

If that was the case, there are many who agree a different president would be in the White House next month.

There’s now a push by some in the US to change the system of voting.

Senator Barbara Boxer, who is retiring from politics, introduced a bill after the election to abolish the electoral college system.

“This is the only office in the land where you can get more votes and still lose the presidency,” she said in a statement.

“The Electoral College is an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect our modern society, and it needs to change immediately.”

Trump has already dismissed those results repeatedly, taking to Twitter on Wednesday morning claiming he would have won if the winner was based on the candidate with the most votes.

“I would have done even better in the election, if that is possible, if the winner was based on popular vote — but would campaign differently,” he wrote.

But before Australians can point fingers and blame the system, the same thing can actually happen in our system.

A party can still lose the election even if gets more votes than the others, simply because of the way preference deals work.
