Meryl Streep takes on Trump in another powerful speech

Meryl Streep made world headlines and even warranted a mention on Donald Trump's Twitter page after her speech at the Golden Globes, and she's done it again.

Remember when Meryl Streep got on stage at the Golden Globes last month and made a powerful speech about US president Donald Trump?

It made headlines around the world, and even led to Trump describing her as “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood” on Twitter.

Now, she’s responded with another speech at a Human Rights event in New York.

Entertainment Weekly reports Streep not only mocked his tweet about her, she also took aim at his “catastrophic instinct to retaliate”.

“We shouldn’t be surprised that fundamentalists, of all stripes, everywhere, are exercised and fuming,” she said in her speech.

“We shouldn’t be surprised that these profound changes come at a much steeper cost than it seems would lie true in the 20th century. We shouldn’t be surprised if not everyone is totally down with it. But if we live through this precarious moment… if his catastrophic instinct to retaliate doesn’t lead us to nuclear winter, we will have much to thank this president for because he will have woken us up to how fragile freedom really is… The whip of the Executive can, through a Twitter feed, lash and intimidate, punish and humiliate, delegitimise the press and imagined enemies with spasmodic regularity and easily provoked predictability.

“Yes, I am the most overrated, over-decorated, and currently, over-berated actress… of my generation. But that is why you invited me here! Right?”

As you would remember, her Golden Globes speech didn’t mention Trump by name and it was a trend she continued in her latest speech.

Just like the Golden Globes speech, some people who are critical of Hollywood actors and actresses talking about Trump, have criticised Streep for speaking out again.

Others have commended her for standing up and speaking out.

And just like most things Trump-related, it’s sure to divide opinions here at Starts at 60 too.

What do you think of Meryl Streep’s speech? Do you applaud her speech? Or do you think she should lay off Trump?

  1. I believe that this President was democratically elected by the people and she had her chance to vote! She
should respect the process in which he became President whether or not she likes him is not the issue !
I believe he has the best interests of America at heart even if he is a little unpolished and a bit brash! Let him grow in the job and he may surprise you. I think the actors and MS are full of there own self importance and are trying to undermine THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES! This is just my opinion,

    • Faye Paull

I wonder if that is what you will be saying when WW3 begins, because that is where we are heading.

    • Diandra

I very much agree with you Stella. I wish people would take a step back and see that he has got America and it’s people very much at heart.

    • Lance Fishman

And the Republicans their powerful supporters didn’t try to undermine the previous PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, Barack Obama from th time that he took office?

    • Patricia

I agree with you 100%! And, yes, Ms. Streep, you ARE overated. Leave President Trump alone! He, not you, WILL keep this country SAFE!

      • Post$cript

Meryl has as muctch right to voice her opinion as those voicing their opinions against her.
If people actually listen to what Trump says, it is pretty obvious that he is in for it for himself.

      • Diandra

Thanks Patricia…….I very much agree. There are many Trump supporters who are not admitting it for fear of being attacked by the crazy left.

    • Nicholas Masefield

So because she had her chance to vote and lost it means she isnt allowed to speak out? Opinions are no longer allowed just like refugees is it? Trump supporters can’t cope with anyone disagreeing with them it’s pathetic

    • Sean

He’s a treasonous piece of orange garbage who is hellbent on dismantling the republic – along with his motley crew of white trash, all voted in by an ignorant mob p, fed on reality television and conspiracy theories.

    • Therese

It is interesting how all are defending the right of the US President to say what he wants and because he was elected then he has the mandate. Why don’t the same rules apply here. Turnbull is constantly berated, taunted, insulted oh and bagged – yet he is the democratically elected Prime Minister of this country with a mandate to govern. Rather than promote Trump – berate taunt insult and belittle the opposition who will not allow the democratically elected Prime Minister of this country to govern. I am actually not a fan of Turnbull or Shorten but what is good for the goose is good for the gander!!!

  2. john shepherd

Never have watched her movies, don’t like her, can’t believe people like this who didn’t get the person they wanted in power. thank you Jesus. Hillary a person who believes everything that comes out of her mouth and her husband randy bill back in the white house give me a break.

    • Diandra

I am very disappointed and actually a little embarrassed at the reaction of Ms Streep and people like her because they didn’t get what they wanted.
All I have seen from them is a lot of foul mouth screaming and ranting.
It is time for common sense to make a come back. The left ideology has nearly destroyed the western world.

    • Post$cript

You never watched her movies, so you don’t like her.
So if you have your head stuck up your back side are you able to smell the roses.

  3. Be Potter

She’s spot on. The POTUS is downright dangerous hes not just a little unpolished and brash he’s an ignorant bully. Just let him try being a bully with other certain world leaders….those of which may have nukes.

  4. Andrew Fisher

This is showing a very disturbing thing. He calls everybody against him liars cheaters bad people, etc. and then rants if they return the compliment. He has made policy statements during the election and then dropped them to do the exact opposite. If he does not stop his “keep them guessing” style nobody will know what he thinks or will do and will, for safety, assume the worst scenario and act accordingly, thereby making the USA , leader of the free world into the ISA global enemy number one. PS: ISA stands for Isolated States of America. Anyone wishing to truly understand him should watch three documentaries; one on Hitler, one on Stalin and one on Mussolini alongside of the current affairs to see the parts of their authoritarian, totalitarian, fascist ideologies he has adopted. I am referring to him as “he” so as not to stoke his ego by mentioning his name.

  5. Jill Toomer

A loathsome creature. Anyone who mimics a person with a disability is just SCUM.

    • Daryl

You need to really get a new punch..that one lost its power when people watched the whole speech. Not just the still shot that the media wanted to make out he was having a go at someone with a disability. Watch other speeches and he does the same action when talking about others who have been caught out telling lies. Try something new to have a go.

  6. wayne lund

I disagree that Streep is over-rated, but her acting ability does not make her opinions any more relevant than anyone else’s. She should get behind her President, even though he is not her first choice.

    • Nicholas Masefield

That is ridiculous, why should she? Because someone is voted into power it means everyone should support him? Does that mean all Germans should of supported Hitler regardless of their view. Absolute insanity.

  7. Dianne Evans

All it takes for evil to flourish is for good men and women to say nothing!

  8. Wayne Watkins

She is one of the best actors of all time & he is making the world laugh at America’s stupidity in electing him King of the American castle .

  9. Attila Ori

Meryl Streep is nothing but an actress. She thinks that she is Important, but she’s not. She thinks that she has wit, but she has none. She thinks she has personality, but she has none. She thinks that her opinion is more important than anyone else’s, but its not. In the great scheme of things, she is nothing more than a self important nuisance. She is entitled to her opinion, just as is everyone else. She is no more important than anyone else. Not only is she overrated as an actress, but also as a human being. Please just fade away, as you, Ms Streep, are as insignificant and believable as the liars you worship!

    • Linda Hughes

Oops thought you were describing Trump there, Meryl Streep is a great actress! Trump is not looking as if he is going to be a great president, just saying!

    • Jan Jakowenko

Attila Ori I agree with everything you wrote. Meryl Streep is a has been pompous arse.

  10. James Dennison

“Crooked Hilary” used a private server for Emails. No secrets were divulged. POTUS tweets on Twitter abusing all and sundry. Japan goes rapidly from taking jobs to providing jobs “4 shunned years?”

  11. jeannette mcnicol

Her words clearly scare you Attila Ori and John Shephard . Well said Dianne and Wayne –voices of sense and reason . Whether or not you like her acting –she has vocalised that which most of us with more than 5 brain cells think .

  12. Joff

She is over rated, what has she ever done to put back into America
