Major supermarket used to target you in new scam

The Australian Communications and Media Authority have released details about a new scam that is targeting Woolworths’ customers.

A phishing scam contacts you about your eligibility to win rewards, including cash, in exchange for taking part in a survey.  The aim is to get your identification and financial details.

Woolworths is being used as the brand “behind” the email to make it look legitimate, but they have no part of the email. Similar scams have used under the guise of Qantas, Telstra, and eBay in the past with the same goal.

One of the main giveaways that these emails are not genuine is obvious spelling mistakes and nonsensical statements.  ACMA advises that if you receive such an email you should visit the official web page of the company to see if they are offering such a competition.

Other suggestions from ACMA to avoid falling victim to one of these scams are:

  • “Not opening SMS or emails from unknown or suspicious sources.
  • Never following hyperlinks contained in these messages (e.g. use a search engine or type in the actual website address yourself!).
  • Never using the same login details on multiple services (e.g. have different passwords for different websites and services).”

The ACMA released an image of what the email looks like in their statement:
