Let’s Talk: Newspaper headlines losing their jazz to poor taste

On a day where we have woken to the death of 10 people to legitimate suicide bombers in Istanbul, the cover of the Telegraph has gone for sensation, with a sweeping cover story on the Bombers ban. They have labelled the Essendon Bombers as “Suicide Bombers” in a way that has left many shaking their heads. Have newspaper headlines become mere sensationalism much like the covers of some magazines, often non-reflective of the content inside? What happened to newspaper headlines?

The headline used to be a real artform, something to look forward to reading for its classy wit and clever use of words and tieback to the bold editorial position inside, but in recent months or even years the fight for the eyeball has us wondering whether newspapers are having to take things too far to get attention.
