If you’ve ever experienced a divorce with children involved, then chances are you’ll be able to relate to Cassandra Thorburn, the estranged wife of Today show host Karl Stefanovic.

There’s been so much talk about the divorce publicly, from comments made by Stefanovic on TV to the covers of all the gossip magazines.

But now Thorburn is breaking her silence, first with a Facebook post, then an open letter online and now in first interview since the split.

The mother-of-three has opened up to Mum Central about her grief at the end of her 21-year marriage.

“I don’t think it’s fair that people are turning our private relationship matters into public fodder,” she said.

“I’m grieving the loss of my relationship. The loss of my best friend and life partner.

“I’m just like every other mother and wife who is going through a marriage break up, only I have the added anxiety of having the spotlight thrust in my face at a time when what myself and my children really need is privacy.”

She also revealed her anxiety at leaving the house after the news of her split went public, starting there are days she dreads going to the supermarket.

“I was recently at the local corner store when the lady serving me pointed to a magazine and asked, ‘Is that you?’. I wanted to say no… that’s not me!,” she said.

“The story inside was a total misrepresentation of who I am and yes, it is my face on the cover but is it me? Not at all.”

There’s been a lot of public criticism of Thorburn, with some columns taking aim at her decision to be a stay at home mum.

She pointed to one article in particular on news.com.au titled “This is the reason women should never give up their jobs”.

“I was really offended by that [article] because I, like many women and many men, have been supportive of my partner’s career,” she said.

“The decision for me to take a step back from my career was our decision together and based on what was best for our family.

“I never thought that I was going to be a stay at home mum forever. I didn’t know when I would return to work, so the criticism that I stayed at home living off Karl because I could, was really hurtful and insulting.”

And she’s got a message to everyone with an opinion about her divorce.

“I’ve had the most incredible messages from people reaching out and people I don’t even know have offered their support,” she said.

“But if you do see me in the street, just some compassion would be nice.”

Goodness, it’s nobody’s business but your own and Karl’s. Do what is best for you and your family. If you can foster an amicable relationship with your ex then that would be great. I can totally relate with your grieving….when it happened to me after 26 years of marriage I fell into a depression for 2 years. What I grieved was the break up, the loss of a lifelong partner, and the loss of the future I had envisaged, you know, the two white haired people walking along the beach holding hands. What hurt was the destruction of the family unit. The feeling of being a failure. Takes a lot of courage to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and carry on for the sake of your children, your self and even your ex. Hold your head high, keep your dignity, act with integrity, be fair to your ex partner….the rest will fall into place. In the depths of depression, I heard what I thought was “the booming Voice of God” – I heard very clearly and succinctly, “God helps those who help themselves” – it hit me like a bolt of lightning, and from that night, my life took a different turn. I managed to lift myself out of depression and found the joy of living again. Take care, be true to yourself and move forward. May God Bless you and your family.

It must be hard but you have to ignore the rubbish and realise most decent people will not be judging you just feeling sad that your family’s are going through hard times.

As I have great respect for this couple leading a wonderful life I truly hope that hey can just take a break, think about what they had, and can it be saved. Of course there are really good reasons to separate but in this world sometimes it just catapults to divorce too quickly.

This situation must be one of THE most traumatic a human may have to face, & endure.

It’s happening more, & more, & not just with ‘celebs’.

Been there, & after 40 years’ married, & having children, to have my husband just want to be a ‘single, independent person’ is something I’m still trying to come to grips with, & the fallout caused.

Trouble is, when this happens at my age, it just makes it all the more difficult.
I lost a beautiful home, which we built, & lived in quite happily for decades’. It was a perfectly practical place, in every way.

Now, I’m renting, & will have to do so til the day I die.
He’d enough money to buy a house. Lucky him!

It’s the biggest ‘curve ball’ I’ve been thrown, & the only way I’ve survived, so far, is to take one day at a time.

    Life sucks, doesn’t it?

Karl is down with Mid Life crisis. There is a famous saying, “The finger should swell according to the size of it”. Otherwise, it will create a problem. In Karl’s case, not only the finger, something else too has swelled beyond repair. He may be eying Delta. Hope she will not get caught to a swollen headed fool.
