Joe Hockey meets with Team Trump following phone scandal

US ambassador Joe Hockey has met with Donald Trump's team to try to secure the refugee deal once and for all.
Joe Hockey has been forced to step in.

Joe Hockey was enjoying a pretty cushy role as Australia’s ambassador to the United States a few months ago. Then Donald Trump became president. Now poor old Joe is having to deal with one of the biggest political spats Australia has been had in years.

Yesterday, news broke that the Sunday night phone call between Trump and prime minister Malcolm Turnbull was less than friendly, with Trump slamming the deal to take refugees from Manus Island as “the worst deal ever” before ending the call 35 minutes early.

Today, Hockey met with Trump’s senior advisor Steve Bannon and chief of staff Reince Priebus to try to smooth things over and ensure the relationship between our two countries remains friendly.

With so much at stake though, is Hockey up to the task?

He’s remained publicly upbeat and enthusiastic about Trump’s presidency, congratulating his staff on their new roles on his social media accounts and staying to true to his reputation as ‘jovial Joe’.

Before he took on the role as US ambassador, Hockey’s international diplomacy experience was minimal. Now he finds himself in one of the most pivotal roles as Australia and America try to maintain their working relationship.

After sacrificing so much to help the US in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, it only seems fair that Australia should enjoy a ‘friends with benefits’ relationship with the US, right?

Trump has made no secret of his America first plan for the next four years, so there’s no guarantee that we’ll enjoy the same relationship going forward.

While Turnbull will certainly have his work cut out for him, it will be Hockey working as the face of Australia and trying to keep things friendly on a day-to-day basis.

Do you think Joe Hockey is the right man for the job? Do you think our relationship with the US will remain intact over the next few years?

joe ,i am having a good time on the aussie public hockey, give us a break, trump will wet himself, rollin g over in laughter,

  2. Rob

No, he’s a clutchf…k, he’ll say the wrong thing for sure, he’s known for it.

  3. Jean Baker

We should sort our own problems with the refugees on Nauru and Mannus Island and then we wouldn’t be beholden to the likes of Trump who thinks he can rule by bullying.
I am absolutely disgusted with him.
God help the people who disagree with him it’s his way or no way.its a wonder if it wasn’t off with their heads being his motto.
I hope the rest of the World and Australia bring him to his knees. He has caused more chaos in two weeks.
He just likes the sound if his own voice. All world leaders should denounce him.

  4. Joy Anne Bourke

No he is not suitable and I hope our relationship does stay in tact.
Joe Hockey was no good as Treasurer and now I feel the same thing as US Ambassador. He is not capable of anything that man. He still robs Australia whilst earning a massive salary in the US and gets a pension from our government and many perks which should not apply. Pensioners get nothing and Hock is getting a massive amount,

America wanted this confusion with Mr Trump in power just what are they up to now the behind the scenes politicians, another world chess game and they will be able to blame Mr Trump. I would not want to be in his position. Watch your backs now politicians. Check that you are not trumped i.e. in playing chess. Where is the world going? A little kindness goes a long way…..
