It’s not often we see a funeral home ad that is controversial. Most of the time the billboards are of flowers or about a recognisable business however this billboard above a freeway in Canada is very striking indeed.

Drivers have been seeing the “Text and Drive” slogan on the huge sign which purports to be an advertisement for Wathan Funeral Home, however it seems there is more than meets the eye. The provocative sign almost seems like the funeral home is daring you to becoming a client of theirs, however it is actually a public service announcement.

When drivers went to visit the funeral home’s website to express their outrage, they were instead met with a page that says:

“If you’re here, you’ve probably seen our “Text and Drive” billboard. And if you have, you probably came to this website to tell us what horrible people we are for running an ad like that. And you’d be right.

It is a horrible thing for a funeral home to do. But we’re not a funeral home.

We’re just trying to get Canadians to stop texting and driving, which is projected to kill more people in Ontario this year than drinking and driving. That’s right. More. And while most people wouldn’t even think about drinking and driving, over half of Ontario drivers admit to reading texts while behind the wheel. That’s more than half of the drivers on the road today risking their lives, their passengers’ lives and the lives of their fellow motorists and pedestrians.

Which should make you even madder than our billboard did”.

What do you think? Is this clever or just plain wrong? Would it distract people further to look up and ponder the statement?

  1. Having read the whole article, I think it’s very clever. Far too many people text and drive and if they don’t kill themselves, they’ll probably kill someone else. As well, every week my husband tells me of some young person who just steps off the footpath while looking at their phones and is almost knocked over by a car. He has almost hit 3 of them. Phones are great – I love mine, but they are really dangerous in the hands of some people.
