Donald Trump takes a swipe at soldiers suffering from PTSD

United States Republican Presidential Nominee Donald Trump has made a number of political gaffs in the lead up to this year’s US election, but it’s his latest that could hurt his campaign the most as many feel he has gone too far this time.

Mr Trump was speaking at the Retired American Warriors event yesterday when he suggested that soldiers who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are not “strong” enough to “handle it”.

“When you talk about the mental health problems, when people come back from war and combat, and they see things that maybe a lot of the folks in this room have seen many times over — and you’re strong and you can handle it — but a lot of people can’t handle it,” he said.

“And they see horror stories. They see events that you couldn’t see in a movie; nobody would believe it,” he continued.

He was quick to receive criticism though for implying that “strong” people can simple overcome PTSD and anyone who can’t is weak.

Many returned soldiers suffer PTSD when they come home after war, and those who have lived through it know it is not a matter of being weak or strong.

Mr Trumps has been branded as “insensitive” and “ignorant” for his remarks.

Only a few months ago, Mr Trump made a big show of saying he will create extra support for American veterans suffering from PTSD.

According to the latest data from the Department of Veterans Affairs (America) an average of 20 veterans committed suicide each day in 2014 – many of them suffering from PTSD.

The figure is believed to be much lower in Australia, but the Australian Defence Force does not actually track these numbers and has said in the past they haven’t found a link between soldiers’ deployment and suicide rates – something that is frustrating for many Aussie veterans suffering from PTSD.

There is no word yet on whether or not Mr Trump will apologise for his comments.

Do you think he was out of line? Or is Donald Trump speaking the truth?

  1. R B Stevenson

Big fat gutless piece of lard, , would not have the guts to put himself in uniform , , , just a disgusting loud mouthed Buffoon

  2. Andrew Fisher

Now there speaks a true warrior – he even has to use bodyguards to eject hecklers and when one got on the stage he jumped aside and told the secret service to “get him outta here”.

  3. Maureen O'Brien

The harm that Trump’s election would do to America is immeasurable. To have such an ignorant , unethical, crass creep as so called leader of the USA would make the whole country the laughing stock of the whole world and anyone who voted for him a source for significant concern. For any of us who believe that George W Bush and Ronald Reagan were as bad as it could get, this would be a new low.

100% agree with Maureen, ignorance is dangerous, and this man has embodied all the ignorant statements of an uneducated person…

I never thought there would be anyone worse then that Z grade actor Reagan or GWB but there is. How anyone could vote for this nonentity is beyond Me

Donald Trump needs to be hit personally by a really major tragedy. It’s the only way he will get some idea of what real life is like. He is the lowest of the low. He even admits to being a liar and a cheat, then calls it being clever.

  5. Dave Pritchard

It’s a Republican thing ;- Anti-abortion,but DO nothing to support children…until they’re of drafting age. Make then go to wars practically no-one wants. but do as little as possible to assist them when they get back damaged in some way, and so on. In the case of Trump of the Trump campaign, you get that “cream floats to the top scenario”. only with them it ain’t “cream” ( the dark colour is a give-away ) , and he has done exactly that, He has been the gaseous turd that has floated high, If America puts him in office we’ll all suffer, but they themselves most of all.

Why don’t you take an active roll in the services Mr Trump and see if you can handle it? …….you need to think before you open your insensitive mouth and, at least try, to understand the devastating impact PTSD has on the returned soldiers life which in turn impacts his family……my husband came back with more that PTSD but that in itself would be enough……..really, what the hell are you going to say next?!

  7. Denise Gillespie

Donald Trump can’t open his mouth without slinging off at someone of something. I haven’t heard a constructive comment come out of his mouth on how he is going to help the economy or anything else that needs fixing. I wonder if he ever went off to war. If he did he would hardly disrespect a return soldier in such a manner. What a jerk and yet look how far he has got. If he get in as President, God help America and the rest of the world for that matter

  8. Trump managed to avoid the draft for Vietnam for “medical reasons”, he had heel spurs, yet he still managed to play tennis & golf & they miraculously healed themselves. I think he can buy himself out of any responsibility. Now his Trump foundation is being questioned because he doesn’t put any money into it & expects donations from other people & then doesn’t distribute any of it to charity. The man is the lowest form of parasite.

  9. Mr Trump I find has an opinion on everything. Has he served in the services? Does he know what it takes to kill people in the name of their country to protect and serve?

As far as I can see, he is a misogynistic imbecile. A man who has been spoon fed all his life on luxuries and would not know what it is to suffer from mental torment.

If he is elected President, I feel that the world is in for a Nuclear War with his finger close to that button.

  10. Lance Fishman

There is a theory doing the rounds that Trump never wanted to be president. He just wanted the publicity of a tilt at the White House to increase his name recognition to assist in his business schemes.
On the other hand, he could actually be a psychopath (along with 10% of CEOs). However psychopaths are usually far cleverer at manipulating those they need to use. In his case the whole spectrum of US voters.
It is also possible that he is just a thick narcissist who has tapped into the resentment of the white working class who have been screwed by people like him but don’t understand how.
Finally two out of left field options,
    – He is the unwitting stooge of Putin, as was George W Bush the useful idiot set up by the oil industry.
    – He is actually working for Clinton to ensure that she has no credible opponent.

  11. I live in New Zealand… you are right God help the world if theres enough dum Americans to vote him in… My son who spent some time in the Army[ not active Service] said Hiltler got voted in… we are watching what you do about Trump… we are very worried… and i don’t think we are alone in thinking this way.

  12. Al

And the alternative to Donald Trump is Hillary Clinton. Think about that for a moment.
