Coles has a new weapon in its fight against the opposition

If you like a glass or two of wine, but you are bound by your budget supermarket giant Coles could have just what you are looking for.

The Coles liquor arm has just scored a major victory and is set to use the win to take on its opposition, especially German discount supermarket chain Aldi.

A $5 bottle of red wine sold exclusively at Coles was recently named the best wine under $20 from Australia and New Zealand at the Winestate Wine of the Year awards.

From a field of more than 10,000 wines the Coles supplied James Busby Big and Bold Shiraz 2015 was selected by a panel of expert judges, including Aussie wine industry legend Wolf Blass.

In addition to taking out the gong for best wine under $20 from Australia and NZ, the Big and Bold Shiraz has become the cheapest wine to ever win the award.

Perhaps this is proof you don’t have to spend up big to get a quality drop.

As far as Coles is concerned it wants to use the victory to its advantage, taking on Aldi in the battle for budget booze.

Aldi already has a well-established wine business that has secured a lot of interest from those who like quality at a low price.

Do you drink wine? Would you be interested in tasting the Coles’ James Busby Big and Bold Shiraz? What are your thoughts on budget wine labels?
