Margaret Court’s most controversial opinion yet

Former tennis champion Margaret Court has been no stranger to controversy in past weeks, with her open letter to the Qantas board informing the airline she will no longer fly their skies because of the airline’s “active” promotion in favour of same-sex marriage setting off a string of bizarre and homophobic guest appearances on television and radio, amid calls for her name to be removed from Margaret Court Arena.

It wasn’t her first homophobic slur, with the former great and now senior pastor of Victory Life Centre church in Perth having said in the past that the Federal Government’s proposed gay marriage reforms would “legitimise what God calls abominable sexual practices”.

But now the 74-year-old has gone ahead and outdone any of her previous offensive remarks, this time going on a Christian radio station and saying that transgender children are the product of bullying and parents who “don’t care”.

“But with the literature, the bullying, the stuff that’s put out today into children’s minds, I tell you what, if you haven’t got parents who bring you up that way and you’ve got parents that don’t care and you’re hurt and offended in somebody saying something to you,” she said.

“I tell you, a child can just start to think ‘well, maybe I am a girl’ when they’re a boy.”

She went on to claim that transgender children are influenced by the devil, and compared it to Hitler and Communism.

“God’s got so much in there about the mind how it affects us, affects our emotions, our feelings, you can think ‘oh I’m a boy’ and it’ll affect your emotions and feelings, and everything else and so that’s all the Devil,” she said.

“That’s what Hitler did, that’s what Communism did, got the mind of the children. And it’s a whole plot in our nation and in the nations of the world to get the minds of the children.”

There have been reports that some tennis players will boycott Margaret Court arena for the Australian Open, and current world number one Andy Murray fears it could lead to scheduling chaos if the matter is not resolved soon.

Do you think Margaret Court Arena needs to be renamed in light of these comments?
