Hepatitis A scare prompts new frozen berry recall

The recall affects a small batch of berries sold in major supermarkets.

Shoppers are being told to check their freezers for frozen berries as Creative Gourmet issues a recall following a Hepatitis A scare.

Creative Gourmet announced a “precautionary recall” of 300g packets of Mixed Berries after tests found an unopened pack had registered an inconclusive result for the virus.

The berries were sold at IGA, Foodworks, Foodland, SPAR, Supabarn and other independent retailers.

Food Standards Australia and New Zealand say the berries could be harmful if consumed.

“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice and should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund,” they said in a statement on their website.

The recall is said to only affect a “small batch” of the berries sold from October 2016 onwards.

Anyone who has bought the berries is entitled to a full refund.

Entyce Food Ingredients, which owns Creative Gourmet, say the berries were sourced from China and Canada, but warned this was not a repeat of the 2015 berry recall that saw thousands of customers affected.

Hepatitis A can be spread through food, drinks and objects and causes a range of symptoms, including; fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and low-grade fever.
