Billionaire’s blunt comment about young people and housing

Billionaires are having their say on young people and housing affordability.

There’s been a lot of conversations about young Aussies and housing affordability recently and of course everyone has a view on it.

In a special segment on tonight’s episode of 60 Minutes, Australian billionaires have their say on the housing affordability crisis.

But there’s one view in particular that’s bound to cause some controversy, and that’s the view of construction mogul Tim Gurner.

60 Minutes has shared a special sneak peek of the segment dubbed Helter Shelter ahead of tonight’s episode and it’s Gurner’s comments that have everyone talking.

He’s giving young Aussies a ‘reality check’ about buying a house.

“When I was trying to buy my first home I wasn’t buying smashed avocados for $19,” he said.

It’s an argument that’s been used before.

Back in October last year, Bernard Salt used smashed avocados to lecture millennials about their spending.

“I have seen young people order smashed avocado with crumbled feta on five-grain toasted bread at $22 a pop and more,” he famously wrote in his column in the Australian.

“I can afford to eat this for lunch because I am middle-aged and have raised my family. But how can young people afford to eat like this?

“Twenty-two dollars several times a week could go towards a deposit on a house.”

Tonight’s segment on 60 Minutes, particularly Gurner’s comments, are sure to have some Baby Boomers nodding in agreement and some shaking their heads.

What do you think of his comments? Do you agree with what Tim Gurner and Bernard Salt have to say?
