Some are calling the move by the Federal Government to bring in all 113 heads of mission for Australia home for a three-day meeting “unprecedented” while others are saying that it’s long overdue.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has confirmed the government’s plan to bring the heads of Australia’s embassies together in Canberra to formalise an updated version of the Foreign Policy White Paper that is set for release later this year. The last time the White Paper has been updated was in 2003 under the Howard Government.
Ms Bishop told Fairfax Media, “At a time of significant global uncertainty, it is vital that Australia harness the experience and intellect of our most senior diplomats”. She added, “This meeting will be important in strengthening Australia’s influence and standing in the world.”
The aim of the paper is to get an agreement across many issues facing Australian on the international stage including terrorism, trade, political troubles in the South China Sea, and the impact of the US Trump Government.
Such a move comes with a hefty price tag as well with the event costing taxpayers$1.1million in travel and accommodations for the heads of mission and $70,000 for the venue for the meeting.
