Amal Clooney makes public stand for justice

She has been making headlines for being pregnant with twins to George Clooney but Amal Clooney is hoping to make headlines about justice.

The British international human rights lawyer attended the United Nations on Thursday night calling for ISIS to be brought to justice.

“Not one ISIS militant has faced trial for international crimes anywhere in the world… Why is it that nothing has been done?” Amal said at the podium.

“Somehow we are no closer to justice today than when I addressed you last year.”

Looking elegant in a lemon maternity dress, Amal said what was shocking was not just the brutality of ISIS but how long those who know about it can remain passive, for something that is such a serious crime, and an ongoing one.

“If we do not change course, history will judge us, and there will be no excuse for our failure to act.”

“I can not understand why you are letting ISIS get away with it.”

She asked the Iraqi government and the UN to establish an investigation and give all the victims of ISIS the justice they deserve.

“I’m asking you today to stand up for justice. Every conflict reminds us that there can be no lasting peace without justice… Justice is also what the victims want.”

As part of her research ahead of this event the 39-year-old has conducted interviews with young girls and past soldiers “who were raped and enslaved by ISIS.”

“It’s been the most harrowing testimony I’ve ever heard. We know that it’s genocide. The UN has said so.” Amal told BBC News prior to the event.

“There are mass graves that are being discovered; just a few days ago in Mosul a huge mass grave that’s thought to have 4,000 bodies in it was discovered and there’s other types of evidence as well,” she said.

“ISIS is actually a big bureaucracy, believe it or not, and they are leaving behind documents,” Amal added.

“You need to collect DNA, you need to collect phone records. And none of that is being done at the moment.”
