Knitters come to the rescue for elephants in India

Jun 05, 2017

As most people in Australia are trying to battle the heat there are some elephants in India that were battling the cold nights.  At least they were until some amazing locals came to the animals add and made them some massive jumpers.

Women living near the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in Mathura heard that the elephants were struggling and came to their aid in the most generous way imaginable.  Over the next few months after hearing about the problem they knitted bright and colourful jumpers for the elephants to wear on those cold nights.

The founder of the centre, Kartick Satyanarayan, told The Daily Mail, “We work hard to give these elephants a life of dignity and protection while we also provide them ongoing treatment and care.

“This winter we are making jumpers to give the jumbos in our care some warmth.

“They really took to their jumpers! I know in some countries it is a bit of a joke to wear the most outlandish one you can for Christmas. But the elephants care less about fashion and more about being warm.”

With 20 elephants currently in the centre and another 50 coming in 2017, they are going to have to start producing the giant jumpers in bulk or they are going to have some unhappy elephant come this winter.

Don’t they look amazing? Have you been to this centre in India? We would love to hear about your experiences.
