The Great Ocean Road was built by servicemen in 1932 as a memorial to those who served during World War One. An arch was created in 1939 but was destroyed during a bushfire. It’s since been replaced and plaques have been erected to commemorate the arch and the people who were responsible for creating the road.
The city of Geelong might not exactly be along the Great Ocean Road route, but if you’re coming through Melbourne, then there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll pass by the city. Take advantage of the trip and grab yourself some brekky along the esplanade and get ready for the journey ahead.
Torquay is the home of one of Australia’s most iconic beaches, Bells Beach, and is one of the great stop-off points on this road trip. It’s also the official starting point of the Great Ocean Road route. Look out for surfers battling the mighty waves.
Considered to be one of Victoria’s hidden gems, Aireys Inlet is a beautiful coastal town that is the gateway to the Great Otway National Park, many beaches, the river valley and the popular photo stop, Split Point Lighthouse.
About four hours’ drive along the Great Ocean Road, you’ll come across one of the main attractions, the 12 Apostles. These rock formations – these days there are actually only eight – spike out of the water up to 45-metres high, and have formed after thousands of years of erosion.
