You don’t even have to leave the city to enjoy tranquillity in natural surroundings, you can discover the best that nature has to offer right in the heart of the city. Savour lush green gardens, or hike and bike acres of parks waiting to be discovered right here in the Big Apple. Grab a picnic basket and a blanket and get ready for one of the most relaxing New York City tours, ever. Here are some of the top places to enjoy nature in New York City.

1. Staten Island Greenbelt

This place provides 2,800 acres of nature-packed wonder, away from the hustle and bustle of the big smoke. There is a paradise to be found in its ponds, meadows, wetlands, parks and forests. This place is a hiker’s delight and offers a year-round calendar of activities, too. 

2. Central Park

When it comes to exploring and enjoying nature, the first place that comes to mind is Central Park. Tucked in the heart of Manhattan, this 843 acre oasis is a nothing less than magical, offering visitors everything from guided bicycle tours, walking tours, quiet gardens, ice-skating, a water park, and a zoo, plus many landmarks and attractions to satisfy almost any tourist.    

3. Kayak in the city

Spending days on the water is one of the most rewarding ways to enjoy nature. Tourists can rent a kayak and explore the waterways surrounding New York city. There are 800kms of coastline waiting to be discovered, so grab the opportunity with both oars. Relish the landscape and capture the views of  the city’s skyline from the water. 

4. Jamaica Bay wildlife refuge

You could sit relaxed on a bench for hours and enjoy nature in this park stretching over 9,000 acres. Observe wildlife from up close and escape the noise of the city. Plus, there are more than 300 species of birds to watch. 

5. Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Head to this park in the spring and relax in the sea of flowers and native fauna. Gaze at a variety of plant habitats, unique exhibits, and Japanese gardens. You don’t want to miss the Cherry Blossom Festival while you’re here.

6. Pelham Bay Park

A visit to the largest public park in New York City means an opportunity to experience a host of different adventures, aside from the kilometres of bike paths and hiking tours. Visitors to the park must visit the small inlet, Turtle Cove, and enjoy a favourite feeding spot for birds. The park also offers an endless array of activities including, horseback riding, mini-golf and batting cages.
