If you’re flying soon, have a seat: there’s some things you need to know. On a recent Reddit discussion thread, airline staff have revealed the secrets of each flight, and there’s definitely some things in here that will shock you.
While a plane can look clean and well-prepared, in fact this is far from the truth, say a number of commenters!
Here’s the most shocking plane secrets from the horse’s mouth…
1. The armrest next to the aisle actually can be lifted
As redditor derityug noted, “It’s a great way to be the fastest person to stand up and wait 20 minutes once the seatbelt light turns off”. The trick also works for the armrest closest to the window.
2. Never drink the coffee on aeroplanes
“Sometimes, the vehicle that fills the potable water for washing hands and making coffee is parked next to the vehicle that is used to dump the [toilet] and fill the blue juice for the lavs. They’re not supposed to. Sometimes, they’re parked at a distance from each other, which is policy, yet the guy who is filling the water is using gloves that he hasn’t changed in over 2 years.”
3. The plane you’re on may have missing or broken parts
It’s called a Minimum Equipment List (MEL) and is a “list of what can be broken on the aircraft while it still remains airworthy.”
4. If it seems like flight attendants are giving preferential treatment to certain passengers, it’s probably true
“Flight attendants have a list of who is who and what seat they are in. As well as what level of frequent flyer they happen to be. Or if they are employees or family and friends tickets. This is why you will see them being rude to someone or bending over backwards for jerks”.
5. Toilet doors
One user commented: “There is a small latch hidden inside the lavatory sign on the bathroom door that will open the door when pulled, even when it’s locked. Airplane peekaboo!”
6. New blankets and headphones
“The headsets that are given to you are not new, despite being wrapped up. They are taken off the flight, “cleaned” and then packaged again”. The same goes for blankets!
7. The cheapest day to buy a flight
Apparently it’s Tuesday afternoons!
8. There are dead bodies on flights
“Almost every commercial flight… has a dead body on-board. Possibly two if you’re on a wide, body aircraft”.
9. A case for buying better locks
‘Locks on zippered bags are useless. You can pop a zipper with a pen and drag the locked zipper pulls around the bag to close them back up. I’ve done this many times to identify bags that are tagless and locked’
10. Why it pays to be nice to airline staff
‘The nicer you are to us, the more we can do for you.
‘Ran out of beef? Ask politely and we will get you a fillet mignon from first class.
‘Your neighbour is noisy? Tell us nicely and we might be able to get you a better seat.
‘More often than not when passengers are aggressive and nasty we’d render minimal service and not extend more help than need be.’
11. Pilot meals
‘Two pilots are served different meals and cannot share, this is done in case of food poisoning’
12. This is why you shouldn’t put breakable items in your suitcase!
