6 Tips on how to be a tourist in your own town

Going away on a big adventure might mean packing a bag and heading to the other side of the world for some, but you could be missing out on a trip of a lifetime right in your own backyard. Instead of heading overseas or interstate on your next holiday, why not think about becoming a tourist in your own town or city, here’s how.

1. Research local events
If you’re planning on being a tourist in your own town the weekend, then take some time to research what events are coming up during that time. There might be concerts, art shows, exhibitions, music festivals or even craft events that are just around the corner.

2. Visit the local galleries
There are some wonderful art galleries throughout rural and regional areas around the country and the exhibits are constantly changing. Visit your local art gallery or museum’s website and discover what pieces are on display during your own mini staycation.

3. Outdoor spaces
There is nothing quite like taking a leisurely stroll through the gardens and parks located around the country. Whether they’re large botanical gardens or quaint suburban parks, take some time to wander around, smelling the flowers as you go. You might be in luck and spot some native fauna and flora along the way.

4. Take the camera along
One great way to see your own city or town in a completely new way, and experience it as if you’re seeing it all for the first time, is to bring your camera along during your trip. Capturing photos of the city or town as you go will force you to see things that you have probably never noticed before. And don’t forget to look up at the buildings that define your area. What is the architecture like? What colours surround you? How does it make you feel? Try to capture this through the lens of your camera.

5. Take a guided tour
There are often free walking tours available in many of the major cities around the country and just because you’re in your hometown, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them, too. By joining a group and going along for the ride, you’re likely to meet people from all over the world and learn something new about your town.

6. Book a room
If you really want to get the most out of your staycation experience, then whey not think about actually booking a room in a fancy hotel for the night. This will give you the authentic tourist experience, even if home is just a short drive away.
