The readers of Empire magazine have voted on their 10 Greatest Movie Characters, with somewhat surprising and conversation-provoking results.
More than 10,000 readers voted, and without further ado, here’s the list:
A few in the list are I think no-brainers. Harrison Ford takes first and third places with his characters from the Indiana Jones and Star Wars series of films. He had seven films right there in which to have his characters impress!
James Bond is no surprise either, what with appearing in over 20 films, in what is the third-highest series at the box office, behind the Harry Potter and Marvel superhero films.
The two Batman characters again are not a surprise, as that too is a multi-movie franchise, as is John McClane from Die Hard. What surprises me is the inclusion of Tyler Durden from Fight Club. It was a role in a single film, and not a film that you would normally put under the category of ‘great’. I guess rule 11 of Fight Club is to really like Fight Club. It is I suppose a cult favourite, as is The Big Lebowski’s The Dude.
It’s also interesting to note that looking at the list, seven of the characters are what could be termed ‘good guys’. So much for us liking the baddies?
New Daily have jumped onto the fact that only one female character appears on the Empire list, and so has compiled its own list of 10 Greatest Female Character. Here’s the list:
How about that list, what do you think? It certainly I think sticks out that it is a far-more rounded list of characters than the Empire list, far less reliant on things blowing up and people being punched.
So there you have it. Two sets of opinions, and two very different lists of the best movie characters of all time. Do you agree with the lists? Who do you think is missing? Who would you like to add? Do you generally like characters who are good guys, or do you prefer the baddies?
Give us your full list, your suggestions, or your opinions.
