Sussan Ley, Australia needs a national Grandparent’s Day!

We celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, yet there is no national celebration for grandparents. Grandparents play an important role in the lives of their grandchildren, and can offer young people today many important life lessons. Many grandparents would relish the opportunity to spend extra time with their grandchildren, during a dedicated day.

Starts At Sixty has now started a petition to encourage the Minister for Aged Care, Sussan Ley, to support a national Grandparents Day. New South Wales already celebrates grandmas and granddads on a state Grandparents Day, so we’d like to see this holiday “go national”.

America also has a nationwide celebration for grandparents, observed in September each year. American families observe Grandparents Day with card-giving, story-telling and special activities relating to older family members. Oftentimes, schools and child care facilities put on special performances, which allow children to learn about their older relatives.

An annual Grandparents Day would be an important way for Aussie children to learn more about their grandparents, and to understand their diverse life experiences. Give Australia a Grandparents Day, so that old and young family members can be united on a more regular basis for this special occasion!
