For so long we’ve been paying an awful lot for our mobile phones, most of you will agree that it has been a whole lot too much. Currently one in five Australians reportedly receive bill shock – where the phone bill far exceeds their predicted amount. But bill shock could be about to come to an end and there’s some light at the end of this tunnel. You just have to make sure you know what to get and how.

The big phone companies are currently in a price war. We have Optus, Telstra, Vodafone and Virgin competing for customers and while the companies enjoyed great success for many years with little competition and unique market advantages, they’re all starting to align and this means one thing – we the people are going with the cheapest, most valuable offer.

Telstra was once valuable because it had such fantastic coverage, therefore it could charge higher prices. Optus on the other hand, had less coverage but cheaper prices. So people typically chose whatever suited them best.

However, now that there’s less competition it comes down to value… Who can provide the most value for the cheapest price?

The biggest craze that’s driving customer value is data and we all need more now as we spend more time on Facebook, the internet and using web based services.

The country’s fifth largest telco kicked off the latest mega data trend, with Virgin Mobile launching “data rollover” plans that gave subscribers a second chance to use their data allowance the month after it would have expired.

Australia’s biggest telco, Telstra, followed by adding as much as 7GB of “bonus” data to its postpaid plans.

Small but price driven prepaid services Amaysim and Aldi Mobile joined the movement last month, with Amaysim giving an additional gigabyte of downloads to two of its three plans for no extra cost, and Aldi introducing a 4GB XXL plan for $45 before raising data allowances in other plans.

But the most hyped data plans came from Vodafone this month with its “double data” offer, while Optus introduced “family sharing” plans to allow relatives to pool their download allowances.

When you’re choosing your mobile phone service provider, it’s important to take into account how you plan to use it before selecting it. Think about how you currently use it and how you’d like to use it. Do you want to spend money on services like calling and texting or is data more important? There are so many ways to use data to communicate that texting and calling are slowly becoming less often used. So make sure that you choose the bill that’s right for you – and if you’re not in a lock in contract but have it renewed every month, perhaps it’s worth visiting your provider and having a chat about what other options are available – because it’s likely they’re cheaper!

  1. Been with Telstra, (in remote location), for decades. Now looking for another possible provider in CQ region. Is there one. Someone said I should check out Southern Phone. Are they any good?

    • I do voluntary tech support in our area. I’ve seen a few people on Southern Phone plans. Most of them are using a plan that’s not suitable for them….they’re paying for large amounts of data that they’re not using. Also with one person, Southern Phones gave her mobile number to someone else. When she discovered this, South.Phones told her it would take them 7 to 10 days to get the number back. I helped her assert herself and she told them to get it sorted asap….and they did. It took them only a couple of days. If you go with Southern Phones, make sure the deal is good and make sure that it suits your needs. They do try to explain things but it’s become apparent that many people in my (over 60s) age group don’t really understand what they’re signing up for. You need to work out how much data you actually need and what you actually use it for and see if the deal is suItable. Ask yourself ….do I need a landline or am I better off with a good prepaid mobile phone deal with for example, 5 gb thrown in and using the phone as a hotspot. No doubt this is the same when dealing with all telcos. That’s been my experience.

  2. Was with Vodafone for years – then my kids moved to the Dandenongs (Vic) and I was babysitting – granddaughter was sick but could not get coverage to phone doctor. Had to drive to foot of mountain. lucky it was not serious. Changed to Optus and have been very happy with price and service . Cheap is not always best – you need to research coverage before committing.Won’t be too long before land lines are a thing of the past.

  3. I am with Aldi and I am finding it really good, it is on the telstra line so I have acess to anywhere Telstra does

  4. I have just signed up to a new deal with optus. $80 a month. That gives me unlimited calls, unlimited SMS n MMS, within Australia, $300 overseas calls, $150 overseas SMS and 6 gb of data which I can share between my phone and computer. They threw in the new Samsung 6 with it. So that is less than $20 a week and I don’t get any shock bills.

  5. Using App through Internet connection will give u voice calls or video calls all over the World for free.

  6. Not a big user so am with Amaysim. Buy a $10 recharge voucher every 3 months. Roll over any credit remaining. Own my Nokia phone. Never spend more than $ 40 a year.. Suits me fine.

  7. If I stand in the paddock on one leg , get service. Use landline all the time at home. No hope with the Mobil. They tell us to many hills in Maleny.

  8. I never get “bill shock” for my mobile phone. Don’t have one! A mobile, that is!
