Life hack: What to do if your phone gets wet

Many of us know that sinking feeling as you watch your phone tumble into the toilet, some water or even the pool. It stops you in your tracks – oh no! What do I do?!

Well, don’t worry: not all hope is lost. In fact a wet phone may not be the end. There is a solution that may resurrect a phone that’s gone for a swim, and the key is acting fast.

Step 1. Turn off your phone. Do this within seconds of the accident… even before you dry it. This will give you the best chance to stop water ruining the circuitry.

Step 2. Dry the outside of the phone with a lint-free towel, paying close attention to any ports, speakers, and microphones. Take out the SIM card and battery too

Step 3. Put the device and parts in a ziplock bag, along with a handful of silica gel packets. You can find these in shoe boxes, in some food product packets and cheaply via eBay.

Step 4. Leave it in there for two days.

Step 5. After two days, turn your phone on – it should work. If not, sadly your phone will need to be replaced.

Note:

There are a few days to make your phone waterproof, or at least a little bit more water resistant:

  • You can buy a case
  • You can use a waterproofing spray (for phones specifically)
  • Use a grip case so your phone won’t fall out of your hand and into water
