Melbourne Cup fashion round up

Nov 07, 2014

This is the one day of the year where I feel Australians truly embrace fashion – people from all walks of life frock up and take a punt. They wear fancy hats and put on a nice tie and flock to their favourite restaurant, pub, hotel, racetrack, RSL, work place or friends place for lunch. For all Australian children, this is their introduction to horse racing and gambling via the classroom sweep and watching the race on TV. Australians know how to celebrate and embrace the tradition that is the Melbourne Cup – the race that stops a nation.

Of all the days of the Spring Racing Carnival, Flemington’s Melbourne Cup Day brings out the most outlandish fashion ensembles. It is a day of colourful outfits, colourful headwear and colourful language. Yellow roses abound. The champagne is flowing. The bets are on. It is a people-watching spectacular. Who will make it first past the post in our fashion roundup? We will let you be the judge…

The exquisite Gigi Hadid, daughter of RHOBH housewife Yolanda Foster & property developer Mohammed Hadid seen here wearing dress by Alex Perry and Jonathan Howard headpiece. I think this is exactly how a young lady should look on Cup Day – modern and, in this case, a little like a fairy princess!

Molly Meldrum (71 years) has still got it wearing his trademark akubra and nod to his love of Egypt.

Smokin’ hot Megan Gale is seen here wearing a revealing Victoria Beckham dress. Normally I would say that this is too much cleavage, but Megan looks stunningly beautiful.

Ron Moss (62 years), better known to us as Bold and The Beautiful’s Ridge Forrester, looks handsome – but is he wearing an up-do? According to the Daily Mail, the decision to wear his hair up was for purely practical reasons “my hair is very long and I thought it would be windy, so this would be better for me”.

Geoffrey Edelsten (71 years) and Gabi Grecko went for the understated approach. I have no words.

Gai Waterhouse (60 years) is one of Austalia’s best dressed women in my opinion. She always looks impeccable, and here she looks like the Queen of the Racetrack that she is.

Rachael Finch looks almost devilish in red, but a very elegant devil!

Gorgeous couple Kate Waterhouse and Luke Ricketson.

Swisse racing ambassador Ashley Hart is seen here wearing a lavender Matthew Salem dress and Kerrie Stanley headwear.
