Banish excessive facial hair with these 3 beauty secrets!

Dec 12, 2015

Excessive facial hair can be one of the most distressing things about getting older for women. It is not a good look – men should have whiskers – not women! Coarse and dark hairs found on the chin, upper lip, chest, back and tummy are known as a condition called hirsutism, generally caused by the body producing too many male hormones.

There are a variety of ways to remove facial hair which have been around for ages – plucking, depilating, waxing, shaving, threading, trimming, laser and electrolysis. All of these methods work, with varying degrees of success depending on the individual. Laser, for instance, works best for women with dark hair only. But these are methods to remove the hairwhy not try stopping it from growing excessively in the first place?

Your first step will be to discuss your concerns with your GP and your naturopath (if you have one).  There may be a specific underlying cause that will need to be treated medically. Or a solution could be as simple as your doctor recommending changes to your diet and increasing the amount of physical activity that you do.

If a specific medical reason can be ruled out, and your diet and exercise regime are on track, there are 3 excellent, proven ways to help banish your whiskers.

You can ask your doctor if it would be beneficial for you take a prescribed an anti-androgen medication like spironolactone which blocks testosterone production, thereby controlling the excess hair growth.

Another prescription medication to ask your doctor about is vaniqa. This is a topically applied cream which slows the rate of facial hair growth. This cream is best used twice a day, eight hours apart. It won’t stop the growth, but it will slow it down considerably. You will still need to go about removing the hair in the best way that suits you.

Spearmint tea – is the golden jewel in this trio of treatments. I was sceptical about it at first, but it is truly remarkable. Studies have been done, which show that by drinking two cups of spearmint tea per day for five days or longer, you will have lower levels of free active testosterone (male hormones) and increased levels of estradiol (female hormones) in your body. You will find that the hair growth will lessen and lessen and will be nowhere near as coarse.

If the thought of drinking spearmint tea makes your tummy churn – fear not! It doesn’t taste anything like the spearmint flavoured lollies, chewing gum and mints that we are used to. It actually has a very pleasant taste, and if I do say so – I prefer its flavour over both peppermint and green tea. It is not the easiest tea to find, but I got mine at my local health food store or you could try here.

The struggle with excessive facial hair for many women is very real and we don’t need to put up with it any more. Obviously these treatments are not miracle overnight cures and they will not be suitable for everyone’s needs, however I hope a lot of you will find the answers you are looking for!

Do you suffer from excessive facial hair? What do you do to treat it?
