Your guide to fabulous race day style! 1

It’s spring carnival time!  Even if you don’t follow the races at any other time of the year, most Australians will tune into the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday November 3rd!

Whether you’ll be watching it on the telly, out for lunch with your girlfriends or lucky enough to be there at Flemington, fashion plays a central role. It is so much fun to see what everyone is wearing!

I have been to a couple of Derby days and Oaks days in Melbourne; the energy in the city is absolutely electric. At train stations, people from all walks of life are decked out in all of their race wear finery. Everyone has made such an effort and look amazing.

One of the traditions I love about the carnival is that they have a specific flower for each one of the main days. You will even see men sporting flowers pinned to their suits – they look so handsome!

The four main race days on the fashion radar are Derby Day, Melbourne Cup Day, Oaks Day and Stakes Day. If you’re eager to embrace the carnival in your little corner of the world, now’s your chance to get started. Gather your friends together, frock up and plan to have a fabulous day!

  1. Nice clothes but really, horse racing? Too much cruelty for me, both to the horses and the audience. Drunk out of control people gambling their money away, braying like donkeys. Check out the film Kenny instead. But hush my mouth, the Melbourne Cup is a public holiday and we all like those. So I will read the papers, listen to ABC Radio National, meet friends for coffee and cook. My grandfather was an SP Bookie and he taught me that the mug punter never wins. I have never gambled as I knew the odds were stacked against me ever making money and there are far better books to read than the form guide.
