The difference between 50 and 60

Jan 09, 2014

I have spent a lot of time talking to people this week, Sixty year old people, fifty year old people, and forty year old people (and some even younger).  And while I am not sixty (but you all knew that), I listen keenly when people talk about how they feel about being 60.  And I have a big question to ask you…

difference between 50 and 60 - starts at sixty

Sixty isn’t “old” in my mind.  In fact, you all know just how young you feel and how “not dead” you are here in our community.  You are online, engaged, reading energetically and ready to reply…  (We hope)…

But still we know here that sixty is very different to fifty, or forty even. At sixty many people are entering or may have entered another a new phase.  A different one from that which they were in, in their fifties or forties.

But we don’t want to preach about it… today we want to know first hand from you, what has changed in the last ten plus years for you.

You see some in the media market tell me there is no difference between a fifty year old and a sixty year old.  That they want the same things and think about the same things…

(I tell them “BOLLOX – there is a huge difference – come listen on our site for a day buddy”).  And it is not “Sixty is the new fifty!”… In fact, I go as far as saying, Sixty is an opportunity today… Unlike it has ever been.

I get the sense that our community is so much less “entangled” in the obligations of everyday life than a fifty year old, and so much more empowered by their own ability to choose that I get inspired being here every day.

But rather than tell these people the difference, I want you to tell them today.  What is the difference between being 50 and being 60 for you?

Have the kids left home?  Have you moved to a smaller house?  Have you started a different way of life?  Have you started doing things differently?  Made different resolutions about health and wellbeing?  Are you preparing for something?  Changing anything? Or staying just as you’ve always been?  Do you have more or less time for you?  Tell us your story – don’t be shy!
