Your say: Do you agree with the Pope on religion and freedom of speech?

Pope Francis has made some amazingly honest and open statements in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attack about religion and freedom of speech. He debated freedom of speech and to what limits it should be accepted but did say that we “cannot insult the faith of others.” So today we want you to read his thoughts and tell us, do you agree with him?

According to the Daily Mail he was speaking from his Papal plane whilst on route to the Philippines.

To make a point he said, “If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch,” Francis said, throwing a pretend punch his way, trying to explain the limitation of acceptable free speech.

He said, “There are so many people who speak badly about religions or other religions, who make fun of them, who make a game out of the religions of others. They are provocateurs. And what happens to them is what would happen to Dr Gasparri if he says a curse word against my mother. There is a limit.”

On criticising the faith of other people he said, “It’s normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others.”

These are some interesting and powerful words coming from the leader of the Catholic church in a time of terror with extremist religion to blame.
