Pope Francis has made some amazingly honest and open statements in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attack about religion and freedom of speech. He debated freedom of speech and to what limits it should be accepted but did say that we “cannot insult the faith of others.” So today we want you to read his thoughts and tell us, do you agree with him?

According to the Daily Mail he was speaking from his Papal plane whilst on route to the Philippines.

To make a point he said, “If my good friend Dr Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch,” Francis said, throwing a pretend punch his way, trying to explain the limitation of acceptable free speech.

He said, “There are so many people who speak badly about religions or other religions, who make fun of them, who make a game out of the religions of others. They are provocateurs. And what happens to them is what would happen to Dr Gasparri if he says a curse word against my mother. There is a limit.”

On criticising the faith of other people he said, “It’s normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others.”

These are some interesting and powerful words coming from the leader of the Catholic church in a time of terror with extremist religion to blame.

So today tell us, do you agree? What are your thoughts on this words?

  1. I am not a religious person but I think he is correct, the worst people for condemning The Muslims seem to be Christians. Not all Muslims terrorise and kill, otherwise we would all be dead already !! I take people as I find them

    • No way are muslims Christians. To be a Christian you follow the teachings of Christ Jesus. Muslims follow a little god mohammed picked out of hhousands of gods which were worshipped at that time in history. The first part of the koran teaches peace. The latter part teaches evil like beheadings, rape, (even babies) pedophillic child marriages and cutting off hands. It teaches it has to dominate the world and get rid of all us infidels.
Jesus tought us to love one another, not to kill and if you rape someone you must marry them and can never divorce them. Which is different to the koran which says you can’t marry them but can pass her onto your neighbour.

      • Muslims worship to the god of Abraham. They accept all previous prophets of the god of Abraham, including Jesus Christ. If you wish to comment, at least do a little research.
As to comments by others regarding Christian attitudes to Islam, perhaps these Christians have been provoked by the words in the Koran that jews and Christians are not-believers and therefore should be struck on the neck (beheaded) and their fingers lopped off- punishments which we see befalling many Christians and others in the middle east today- even as we write.

        • Speaking of research….research shows that Jesus Christ is not a prophet, He is the Son of God….

    • I often hear the word “christian” (with a small c) used as a generalised adjective meaning good hearted, god fearing (whatever your god may be), a “doer” of good deeds. “Christian” (with a capital C) seems to refer to followers of Jesus Christ. Therefore, to my mind, some Muslims can be “Christian”. There are anti-Muslims in every religion and creed. This is clearly shown by the hundreds of postings on Facebook..

    • Carol she didn’t say Muslims were Christians. She said the Christians are the worse people for critizing the Muslims

  2. I also agree with the Pope! We will never have peace in this world while people ridicule others’ religion and/or race.

  3. I think tolerance of each other is the key

  4. Yes, it’s common sense. So why can’t those terrorists see that? Why do they want to live in democratic countries and yet don’t like the way we live?
