As taxpayers, you’d think we would be able to check and see how our money was being used, and luckily now we can when it comes to politicians and their penchant for expensive travel.

Acquire Procure have created an interactive data chart called Poli Flight where you can see exactly what is being spent, where and by who.

It is an interactive data visualisation of every Australian politician’s domestic travel between July 1 and Dec 31, 2014 (the figures for 2015 aren’t yet available).
The data can be sorted by politician, airport, date and dollar amount.
“Yes, you can see how the politicians compete over time on how much money they are spending on flights,” Acquire said – it’s about $1 million per month.

To try to interactive map and see who is spending our hard earned money, click here.

Int he above timeframe, $5.9 million was spent on 10,000 domestic flights, by 235 politicians. The average flight cost was around $580.

Surprisingly, Bronwyn Bishop was not at the top for her expenses – it was WA senator Rachel Siewert who spent $77,000 in taxpayer funds over six months.

With that said, Bronwyn Bishop’s most lavish journeys were documented to have occurred late last year so therefore are not included in the data.

On the subject of Bronny, the disgraced former Speaker has been snapped taking a cattle class flight to Canberra, a far cry from her chartered flights and helicopter flights.

It begs the question, is it only OK to have huge travel expenses when it’s not coming out of your own pocket? It’d be interesting to know if she flew Tiger Airways or Qantas.

Here’s the evidence:

Tell us, are you surprised to see Bronny in cattle class now that she has to pay? And what do you think of other politicians’ travel costs? What can be done?

  1. Why are you so nasty? Do you think Bronwyn was the first & last ? You are so gullible.

    • You are right David and she travelled alone and paid the money back not like Burke who took all his family and did not pay the money back. As this is the over 60 post I would have thought you would not be so horrible to one of our older female Politicians

    • If she hadn’t have been so arrogant in thinking the rules didn’t apply to her in the first place, she wouldn’t be were she is now, she bought it on herself.nobody’s fault but her own.

    • David Edwards & Marilyn Parkes: geez are you alright or just brain dead ? Have you been out of the country. For gods sake Brownyn Bishop is a thief that simply got caught out along with Joe hockey and all his trips to cairns and Western Australia. Your bestie brownyn thinks your a peasant anyway, stupid old bag. Worst speaker parliament has ever had

    • How kind of you Robyn. You are the brain dead. How about Tony Bourke ? Or are you leaning a bit too much to the left, or hadn’t you heard what he & the rest of the gang have done. Get a life.

    • her refusal to apoligize for 3 weeks has not made this any better, the fact is , it is taxpayers money being used for a helicopter ride to go to a Liberal Party function and charter flights and limousines so she could drive in the bus lane , this may be a shock to you David but ALP, Greens and Independent voters pay taxes too and they don’t like seeing their money wasted like this

    • Do you mean Tony Burke, David? I am personally disgusted with all the politicians. I don’t mind if they travel first class themselves, if they are on legitimate business but to take their families and to use the travel “entitlements” for their own personal affairs is deplorable. The only reason Bronwyn Bishop paid the money back Marilyn, was because she was caught out and for this reason I don’t believe she deserves any special treatment due to her age. Perhaps because of her age you would expect her to know better, but after living her privileged life on the Australian taxpayer’s money she had become accustomed to rorting the system. No excuses for any of them. It is theft under the label of “entitlements”. The entitlements need to be changed!

    • David you really are a dumb arse. Warren truss spent $22.000 flying from Canberra to Brisbane. Won’t a good fight then bring it on

    • Julia is now on full payments and gold card all entitlements and staff and office and flying where ever she wants and we are paying for it Evan though she has a new high paying job.

    • Cheryl Holt.. So is John Howard.
John Howard was the top spending ex-PM with $319,000 in expenses over 2012-13.

Spent $100K on limos in seven months.

He spent $450,000 office refit in 2008/09 to his swanky digs in Sydney’s MLC building, which already costs nearly $14,000 a month to rent.
They all do it and it should be stopped.

  2. Not enough, we should see international travel as well, especially for those politicians who travel for study purposes.

  3. I don’t have a problem with pollies flying first class but perhaps they should pay the difference between the two airfares? Or be subject to FBT like the rest of Australians?

    • I don’t think it’s about the pollies travelling business class, it’s about them taking the family with them

    • I think they should live by the same rules as the rest of us. They need to pay for their family to travel.

  4. let them go in cattle class & pay there own way just like most of f us nothing wrong with it , but i do think they should wait for retirement age to get there pension at halve there salary plus no perks

  5. She is still entitled to business class as a politician so I expect it is a case of atonement for past sins. I think it is a bit difficult to judge wastefulness just on a dollar figure. WA pollies will have greater travel costs than a Sydney based pollie. Country pollies may have connecting flights. Ministers may have genuine need to travel overseas to meetings, ordinary MPs maybe carrying out committee business. It would be great if all pollies had a what is your member doing today site. That would enable us to see what our local member actually does, where they travel etc.

  6. When they lose their seats or retire and are not entitled to age pension they usually have jobs to go to so they should get their super and an age pension at 65 or 70 same as us. Don’t know why they need an office or staff after they leave so cut that out. Also no need to fly all over the country/world on the public purse either so cut that. As they are no more special than anyone else the age pension should do them as well. And they no longer should have their super subsidised to the extravagant levels it is now. This could save $millions each year. Then all the $billions in the futures fund for their futures could be spent on us and the things the country desperately needs.
