The words you might not be saying correctly

You probably use some of these words on a daily basis, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you are pronouncing them correctly.

Dictionary.com has released its list of the 30 most commonly mispronounced words and some of them might come as a surprise.

Popular words like ‘espresso’ have made the list, but so too has ‘prerogative’. How many of these are you getting right?

While we enjoy eating food and demonstrating our cooking prowess, many stumble over the words almond, caramel, croissant, espresso, quinoa, sherbet, turmeric and Worchestershire.

In case you were wondering, the correct pronunciation for ‘almond’ is ah-muh-nd.

Others to make the list included epitome, et cetera, genre, hyperbole, niche and verbiage, but though these might be tricky they are not the most mispronounced word on the list.

That honour goes to affidavit – correctly pronounced af-i-dey-vit – and refers to a written statement confirmed by oath or affirmation.
