Australia is set to receive 12,000 refugees in the coming months, with the first group arriving this month.

The government agreed to accept the refugees last September but has so far taken its time on the deal, with long periods of visa processing and background checks.

So far only 26 refugees have arrived in the country since the deal was signed, which has prompted some groups to petition the government for faster processing times.

The Refugee Council of Australia has been pushing the government to speed up the process, but Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has said national security is the top priority and that proper background checks take time.

Despite the government’s assurance that all refugees will undergo thorough checks, it has done little to ease the minds of many people who are worried about an influx of refugees.

There have been numerous protests across the country in recent months and rising tensions in some communities.

Other Australians have welcomed the news though and are ready to do what they can to help refugees settle into their new lives in Australia.

The families arriving this month are from Syria and Iraq and will be settled in NSW.

NSW Premier Mike Baird has said he is certain people will do their best to be welcoming to the families.

I am thrilled to hear that 12,000 Syrian refugees will soon be able to find safety on our shores, after the Prime…

In the six months since Australia agreed to take the refugees Canada has accepted more than 28,000, just over 26,000 of whom have already arrived on Canadian shores.

There are calls for Australia to increase the amount of refugees it accepts, with some people saying we need to do more to help the millions of displaced families across the Middle East.

What are you thoughts on this issue?

Would you welcome refugees into your community? Do you think Australia should do more to help refugees? Will the refugee resettlement plan work?

  1. No no no no. Our taxes needed to support our own not give these people everything before us. New cars. Free education. Free housing. And money lots of it goes to them. I have refugees living across the road from me. They got reduced housing, they have a brand new car they have all New furniture which was delivered and set up before they moved in also a backyard full of swings etc. the last lot that was there got the same. But they have now moved into their new government assisted brand new home. With all the new stuff brought and paid for by us the tax payers. Where is the fairness in that when Australians have to go on the housing waiting list for up to 3 years.

Rosalyn, somebody has been pulling your leg, dear. What a load of rubbish! If your neighbours were given anything, it would not have been brand new, but donated by welfare groups and churches. These people most definitely do not get more than Australians.

    • Megs

      Well said,i agree with you.
Its a disgrace to not help our own first!
How dare they put our lives in Danger with this invasion of barbaric beings.
We’ve all seen whats been happening overseas and especially on new years eve.
The great Australian lifestyle we’ve all had is drastically bout to change.
This government needs to face the firing squad for this treasonous act on behalf of themselves and not the wishes of the Australian People.
Just because they and their families have protection. .we dont….they are leaving us out like burley for fishing to face the evil to come and take over.
The Australian People will fight for our nation .
      Magna Carta will take place.

Just last night on current affair they were saying they can’t afford the age pension.
Funny they can find plenty of money for everything else. Unless we do something they will make us sell our homes to live on so our kids can’t get our homes.
They don’t want young people to own a home.
It’s all in control. Why are they not doing enough to stop the drug epidemic.
I will not vote for the major parties but now they are making it so we have.

The Goverment are doing the right thing by checking backgrounds, otherwise we end up like Germany and Europe! We are so multicultural now, it’s nothing new, except we are now giving genuine refugees a safe haven.

    • Gloria

I think you have your head in the sand

    • Phil Heaton

Do you really think the background checks will be sufficient? I dont think so.

    • Simon

WE may be multicultural, muslims only mingle with muslims and will NEVER assimilate into Western culture.

    • Keith

Too little too late! We will pay for this “kindness” from the Govt!

  4. John Powell

I agree we do want them, look what it costs to have each one of them here, using our tax money, amd money from pensioners to support these people who will not blend in with Aussies no no no no full stop

    • Lynette Hein

I agree with John. These people will NOT assimilate, just look at the immigrants we already have.

  5. Angie B

I would welcome them to our town and hope that they would assimilate and become at one with our country.

    • Diane

      They will not assimilate.
They have not assimilated anywhere else in the world so why should they here?
If they were going to assimilate then they would take the face coverings off!

    • Dee

They wont assimilate. The rest of the world have seen this. I’m sorry ,but your ignorance to the truth is astounding.

    • Ralph

They will never assimilate and just like in Europa their offspring will turn on you .

    • Lana

They do not want to sorry words from their own mouths

    • Linda

Please Angie, read the Quran. This book clearly instructs Islamic followers that they must not make freinds with any but their own religion. It also includes horrendous descriptions of how, when & why Muslims should kill unbelievers- something that we see being carried out around the world every day. I don’t see how it is possible to be a ‘true’ Muslim and be a peaceful person. Again, please read the Quran.

  6. Katrina Cornish

we need not be racists, however LEAVE THE DAMN FACE COVERS BEHIND!!!! because what the hell do they have to hide????? got to be something and shame on the men whom make their wives daughters etc cover up because in my mind they must be prettydamn ashamed to have their women covered up!!!! if you have nothing to hide then show your faces because the way we see it is that they have plenty to hide!!!! if not then show. its that simple, as its never been written in bible or any religion to have to completely hide, to dress decent ,yes i can understand but to cover completely is wrong, shame!!!!

    • Lana

To their husbands and all men they are but possessions and do not have the right to show themselves publicly. Saudi Arabia has just passed a law stating the women are mammals. They do not believe they are human!

  7. Ron Bellcha

Governments are complaining about the costs associated with pensioners and unemployed, yet they are still bringing refugees here to Australia, wonder what would happen if their countries offered unemployment benefits and more, plus pensions, would they bother coming here, to eventually take over the Australian Way of life. Already we see Islanders and Sudanese rioting in Sydney, guess who will start this next, beware be very aware all Australians.

  8. K. Wakeman

our community took in a lot of the Sudanee’s refugee’s they have assimilated well, if the Syrian refigee’s assimilate as well no problem, but what can we do if they don’t assmiliate???? that is my worry.

    • peter

You have seen the sudanese and the islander riots and fights in the news lately, maybe take off the rose tinted glasses and look around at what is happening with the muslims wanting to change Australia into the fly blown crap heaps the come from

  9. Carol fornari

Not unless they are prepared to live the Australian way of life and leave their religion in the countries they are fleeing from Become Australian

    • Ralph

If only there was to deprogramme their religion out of them . They will never leave their religion as they will be put to death according to the Koran if they did

  10. Pamela Gavin

I thought most of these refugees were to be Christian not Muslim. More lies and why just western sydney why not eastern suburbs or north shore we have enough problems none of the excuses that they need to be with their own. Learn to assimilate

    • Roger Harrison

Tony Abbott stipulated Christian & minority groups at risk. Turnbull changed it to Moslem as no Christians can be found in the UN camps as the Moslems have either killed them or driven them out. Fact!

    • But we knew they were lying when their lips moved. The government has gone rogue and is intentionally bringing garbage into the country to destroy the people, their peace and their freedom so the establishment can take control. The government is just as guilty as a guy who throws a bag of rattlesnakes into your children’s bedroom at night… or someone poisoning your drinking well. We both know what we would do to someone we caught doing that, so the question is; what are we going to do with the government?

    • Lana

This is true they should learn to live with Australians and understand our way of life and learn that if you are an Aussie then you will be given the same respect. If you do not want o join our great nation then go to a Muslim country where you will feel at home do not try to make us like you as we are not.
