Millions of Aussies are set to cough up the cash for Pauline Hanson’s security detail if threats are made against her while she is a Senator.

As a controversial figure, Ms Hanson often faces rallies from protestors and opposition when she attends public events.

Last time she was a federal MP, taxpayers footed a $1 million bill in police protection for Ms Hanson, which has left a bad taste in the mouths of some.

Former Justice Minister Amanda Vanstone said yesterday she believes police protection “emboldens” Ms Hanson and that it makes her feel safer when talking about controversial topics.

“She had close personal police protection. And I think that only made her comments stronger.

“Quite simply, it emboldened her,’’ Ms Vanstone said, reports News Corp.

All federal MPs are eligible for security protection if a threat is made against them, with taxpayers spending millions every year on CCTV surveillance, new security gates and windows and personal police protection for MPs.

While some say the protection is justified, others believe politicians should know that danger come with the job and should have to fund their own security.

“Another thing we have to pay for because politicians can’t keep their mouths shut,” wrote one voter on Facebook.

“Of cause Pauline Hanson is going to get threats made against her, which means we’ll definitely be paying it. Great.” said another.

Others jumped to the defence of the allowance though.

“Our politicians are the ones who fight for what we believe in. If they’re the only ones who can say what we’re all thinking and have people listen, we should pay to protect them. It’s like paying for freedom of speech. Not ideal, but I’d rather that than have them live in fear for speaking the truth,” said one commenter.

Are you willing to pay for Pauline Hanson and other pollies to have security? Or should they have to pay themselves?

  1. why not , who has police looking out for them , so why pick on her , tell us who else and how much does it cost us ‘ just pick on her , what crap john

    • david

Yes we need pauline to get things sorted

It’s “pick on Pauline” time again then! ALL politicians get protection if required, payed for by tax payers, and what a fuss there’d be if it WASN’T provided, for her and for the rest of the parliamentarians. Why does this poor woman have to be the scapegoat for everyone else, when she is only getting what the rest do. For God’s sake pack it in and let her and the rest get on with the job of trying to get this wonderful country back to where it should be. At least that’s what Pauline wants, which can’t be said for some of the bludgers in Canberra!

    • Maree

What should be happening is going after the ones who are putting her life at risk therefore eliminating the need for protection! This would be the right thing to do.

    • Diane Welsh

Very well said couldn’t agree more

    • F Robinson

Quite correct Brian. They all get the same “entitlements” so why pick on Pauline?
The reason is that they are concerned about the unexpected support she is getting. That makes her fair game for the media and main stream politicians.
PS. I don’t think she will hire a helicopter to get home, Unlike one who will remain nameless!

  4. Are we willing to let the major parties just do as they please with no one commenting no opposition, Are we silencing the people’s candidate’s with little or no security through fear of assault, And should we allow mayhem in the street’s and just out of quirosity did this topic pop up as a get Pauline again, I know that’s not possible is it

  5. Rhonda

At least we are paying for something we want. Better money spent than what we pay politicians for years after they leave their jobs.I say go Pauline!

    • Kay West

And so say all of us, go Pauline

The real question should be Why and who are the threats from? And what should we as a country be doing about that? Will everyone who speaks out against an political ideology that masquerades as a religion end up having police protection? Or one who criticises any section of the community for terror or criminal violence have to be afforded protection as well! Track them down and jail those who threaten and make it public.

Thats what you get when you insult people, freedom of speech doesn’t give you the right to insult people…
Expescially when you are in the highest office in the land,,,,,

  9. Does not surprise me one bit .and if ppl want her well let them pay not every dam tax payer

    • Brian Lee

I’m afraid that is just plain stupid

    • Gloria Paddock

Well your comment sounds good except every taxpayer pays for a party they don’t support, so why should Pauline Hanson be excluded.

  10. Kath

How much has already been paid out for other pollies protection?? And nothi b g has been said. Just another excuse to bash pauline, get off her back!
