If you like a bit of ice-cream (and let’s face it, with the weather heating up, who doesn’t) you might want to give Coles brand vanilla a bit of a miss after a Western Australian father found something rather disturbing in a bowl of the stuff he was just about to give his son.

“[I noticed] the substance about five minutes into my son eating it, when he told me there was ‘glass’ in his ice-cream,” the man, who wished to remain anonymous, told WAtoday.

However, on closer inspection the man believed that what his five-year-old son had actually bitten into was not glass but a substance more like methamphetamine.

“I then licked the little piece, as I thought it could be crystallised sugar, or some other food additive not mixed properly, but I was shocked [to find it had] a very chemical taste,” the man says.

While he was not able to accurately determine what the substance was, the man did admit to being a three-year clean drug addict and said he “knew what meth tastes like”.

He sought advice from Health Direct and Fiona Stanley Hospital and says he monitored his son for five hours after he had eaten the ice-cream.

The man says he does not hold Coles accountable for the incident as the ice-cream was properly sealed.

“The manufacturing company are the ones who will need to investigate this further to find out how it happened… All I hope is the manufacturer take this information and do the best they can to ensure there isn’t a repeat of this and any other possible products that could hold the contaminants are removed from sale,” the man says.

Coles had been contacted for comment, but had not responded at the time of publishing.

  1. Of course I am concerned. For some years now I try as much as possible doing all my cooking at home and from whole ingredients. I can only imagine what is going behinds the closed doors of food manufacturing, restaurants etc. And what about hygiene? I have seen, in some food shop, a man coming out from the toilet doing up his pants fly OMG!!!

Unfortunately, this circumstance is the major hazard of mass produced foodstuffs. ‘Foreign matter’ as it is called in production lurks everywhere and obviously manufacturers or processors rack their collective brains to avoid contamination. I well remember a major chocolate manufacturer being confronted with one of their larger blocks by a complainant, which showed the end of a razor blade embedded therein. The item was far too large to pass through an extruder nozzle so it had to be pressed into the chocolate while it was still molten. This occurred many years ago before security cameras, metal detectors et al, but the finger was aimed at one of the employees involved. In this case the kindest explanation I can think of is one of the processors had the chemical in his clothing and which fell into the mix. Like speeders, drunks, accidents and saboteurs these things will happen despite every reasonable precaution. To expect otherwise you probably should sleep in a concrete bomb shelter!

  4. Bought cooked chook quarter from local Coles ‘hot box’, last Tuesday arvo.
    At home, put it into ‘fridge, then about an hour later, re-heated it in microwave, before making sandwich.

    About five hours’ later, I collapsed.
    I woke up, on the floor, a few hours’ afterwards. I’d spewed all over my clothes, & floor. I started sipping water, & just kept spewing for the next 5-6 hours’. Also had diarrhoea.
    The rest of Weds & Thurs, I just slept, & sipped water.

    By late Thurs, was ‘well’ enough to be able to drive to my GP.
    Diagnosis: Severe Food Poisoning, & Gastritis.

    I’ve not been SO ill in the past 23 years’!

    • not really Coles fault…chilling & reheating it wouldn’t have helped…

    • I read an item stating that no chicken should ever be reheated. Once it’s been cooked it should be eaten straight away or served cold; otherwise it’s possible to have the result experienced by Jeunesse

    • We should all know by now that chicken is to be handled with care. Cannot reheat and reheat. Sometimes it is how we handle food.

  5. I think most of the complaints about foreign matter in foods are caused by the purchasers in their homes.

    Recently there were complaints of blow-fly maggots in a hot BBQ chicken – which would not have happened.
