There’s a lot of talk about gun laws in Australian politics at the moment, and now one Federal politician is calling for emotion to be taken out of the debate.

If you haven’t heard about it already, the debate surrounds the Adler – a rapid-fire shotgun that is currently banned from being imported to Australia.

It turns out the gun was banned because the states and territories couldn’t work out what category to classify the gun as.

But now there’s a move among some politicians to lift the ban.

The ABC is reporting NSW Nationals leader Troy Grant is endorsing a plan to change the category of the gun.

If his plan was successful, it would allow people to import the Adler if they could explain what they wanted to use it for.

The idea has the support of Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie, who is calling for politicians to “take the emotion” out of the debate.

“I think New South Wales has taken the lead and selected a highly appropriate classification for that particular gun,” she said.

“I’d call on states and territories right across the country to actually look at the evidence, take the emotion out of it and seek to classify this gun in an appropriate way, which I believe the leader of the Nationals in New South Wales has done.”

Talk about the Adler ban came to the fore in parliament yesterday, when Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm revealed the Abbott Government last year had agreed to lift the ban in exchange for his vote in the Senate.

He claimed he had an agreement that the ban would be lifted in June this year.

Senator McKenzie is calling for a calm and measured approach.

“When we get highly emotive in these sort of instances, probably the first casualty is the truth,” she said.

“We need to be very, very careful not to seek the cheap political fix.”

What do you think? Should the ban on the Adler be lifted?

  1. Speak to the families of those massacred at Port Arthur – there cannot be discussion about gun control without emotion. ANY weakening of gun laws in this country is the start of a slippery slope. I am NO fan of John Howard, but his guts in standing up for gun control cannot be watered down by this weak and gutless government, which, it seems, will do anything for a vote.

    • Elaine, your comment is emotional and illogical. Howards over-reaction in his gun-grab/buyback,was a purely political kneejerk vote grabbing excercise. It accomplished the removal of a few thousand semi-auto rifles by lawful owners, but drove the rest of them underground. Many owners, when seeing the hysteria exhibited the sheepie and anti firearm proponents simply hid their weapons away. They are still hidden and will i suspect remain so for generations. In the meantime firearm numbers have increased dramatically. Granted they are now registered and perhaps security of those particular weapons is improved.
But seldom are licenced shooters of registered firearms involved in crime.
And certainly no Adler shotguns were involved in the Port Arthur shotguns.
The absolute crap circulating that your hero”Little Johnnys” gun control laws are being watered down, are just that.
The problem is,the screwing down of the lawful, licenced , firearm owners rights to pursue their chosen sport.
Granted the gutless government will do anything for votes,we can agree on that.
Us legal(and licenced) shooters see the pressure being applied constantly by noisy, very loud, hysterical anti-gunners
intent on screwing us with the aid of symphethic MSM /Green ratbag fanatics.
Dont your lot see that you are approaching the firearm problem you think you see, from the wrong direction.
Go collect all the illegal firearms from the criminals organised crime, gangs and bad boys and scum.
When you have them all them all perhaps the rest us us can be convinced to give up shooting as a hobby.

    • Get your facts right first. There is no weakening of gun laws. The pollies are striving to catagorise an already previously approved weapon to control it’s use. No gun control could have stopped the senseless massacre in Tasmania. The gun shop that sold the weapons illegally should be in gaol as well!

This is absurd, where did this come from? what on earth are gun control laws being used for to bargain for votes in the senate? This is the lowest of the low. Keep these vial weapons at bay thank you very much.
As if we need more tools that could be put to violence in our community out on the streets. No thanks!

  3. THIS TYPE OF GUN –FIRST MADE AND IMPORTED IN 1874 BY WINCHESTER HAS NOT BEEN IMPROVED ON JUST MADE OUT OF STRONGER STEEL! THE ACTION IS STILL THE SAME A SINGLE SHOT UNTIL YOU CYCLE THE ACTION. NOTHING FAST — ITS ONLY “HYPER LETHAL” TO FERALS /RABBITS/PIGS -SEEING AS HOW THESE HAVE BEEN I THE COUNTRY SINCE 1874 , THEY HAVE NEVER BEEN USED IN A CRIME..!!??.. THESE GUN CONTROL FREAKS HAVE NOT GOT A CLUE . THE WORST THING IS -JOHN HOWARD MADE EVERY LAW ABIDING FIREARM OWNER , A CRIMINAL- IN 1996 BECAUSE WE HAD GUNS.. THIS WAS TO GET ALL OF OUR FIREARMS ,AS PER UN AGENDA 21-30.

    • Peter, you are talking through your hat. People ARE allowed to have guns and if you apply for a permit for the right reason, then you are NOT a criminal. That was not the intent of the gun buy back at all and you know very well it wasn’t. If the gun laws are watered down then it will be “open season” on everyone – the criminals already have guns coming in on boats – so just how closely affiliated with the insane American laws do you want to be?

  4. Weapons of any type. are just metal and wood. Mainly

  5. Guns are for killing. Nobody sweeps the floor with a gun.

  6. Absolutely not. There is no one is Australia that has a need for this type of weapon. We do not have 10 foot high grizzly bears, lions, tigers or any other animal that would need taking down as it charged you. We have almost eliminated deadly shootings in Australia by the current laws that we have. Please do not bend to bureaucratics who “can’t decide” what category this gun falls in. It is a rapid fire gun so who gives a dam what category it falls in, it needs to be banned without question.

  7. NO. Keep the Gun Laws in Australia tight and controlled. We do not need to have gun owners pushing for more or easier, availablity of guns in this country. There are enough guns that come in illegally without making more of them legal.
