Prince George accused of ‘animal cruelty’ 109

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been accused of animal cruelty after allowing Prince George to give a treat to the family dog Lupo.

While there were many things we didn’t know about the three-year-old, one thing we did know was that he had a fondness for animals.

It is therefore quite a shock when the the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have come under fire from some critics, who ridiculed them for giving the spaniel treats.

In a collection of images released last night to mark his birthday, Prince George can be seen crouching on one knee with a cheeky smile on his face as he offers Lupo a white chocolate ice cream.

Experts have warned that dogs are allergic to both dairy and chocolate and feeding them milk-based products such as ice cream could cause them digestive issues.

Paula Boyden, Veterinary Director of the Dogs Trust charity, said: ‘We would always advocate seeking methods to keep your dog cool, but possibly not in the form of an ice cream, unless it is a dog friendly version. The cow’s milk and sugar content in ice cream can sometimes lead to digestive issues. Whenever you do treat your dog, do consider the ingredients and always seeks the advice of your vet.’

A spokesman for the RSPCA told MailOnline:  ‘It is lovely that Prince George is trying to help keep his family dog, Lupo, cool in these high temperatures.

‘[But] we would advise people to be cautious when giving their dogs food meant for human consumption as some items, like chocolate, can be highly toxic to dogs and dairy items can be difficult for them to digest.

‘Instead of ice cream we would suggest making an ice lolly from pet friendly ingredients. Making these can be really fun for children and the end product is both safe and enjoyable for dogs.’

Twitter had some backlash as well:

    • My Lab had ice cream as a treat and lived to 15 yrs no health probs Some people should get a life and stop looking for negatives

    • What utter rubbish. This is not animal cruelty. Maybe a bit misguided but I am sure many families have made the same mistake. It is so easy to make judgement on people in the spotlight. Maybe a little advise would have been more in line.

  2. Has anyone noticed that the dog appears not to be actual;y eating the ice cream !!!

    • I was just going to say exactly the same thing. Some people just have nothing else to complain about

  3. It is unbelievable that people in this world where there is daily misery and violence can create something other than the joy and love of a child sharing a lick of an ice cream with a loved and trusted pet into something menacing!! Look for the joy! God knows there is far too little if it. Sad!

    • You need more than a lick of icecream to kill a dog. My vet reassured me when my cavie got hold of a row of three milk chocolate that he would be fine. He would not encourage it but he would need to eat a full block to make him sick.

  6. He is a 3 year old for pities sake everything is shared with his best friend. I wish people would focus on the important issues in life

  7. for heaven sake people get a life why must the word be full of people that cant bear to make others unhappy

    • Well said…… I wish there were more beautiful photos like these in our news each day instead of all the evil around. Also, as someone mentioned, the dog isn’t eating the ice cream anyway.

  8. Yet another over reaction to an innocent photograph. I should think all the adults are aware of potential dangers here and as experienced dog owners would not allow the dog to eat the whole thing. I suspect the scenario was stage managed by the photographer to get a cute picture.

  9. The west these days has a high population of Twats, imbeciles, & over-educated politically correct, left leaning latte sipping, Pokemon chasing idiots. And we wonder why Muslims want to introduce sharia.

    • I agree. For God sake! Some people are so miserable, they can’t stand to see a little happiness that seeing these beautiful innocent children can bring. Get a life!

    • Steve! I cracked up laughing at your post. Have to entirely agree. Leave a three year old alone, sharing treats with his pet dog…………really people, lighten up!

  10. One or two licks of an ice cream….big deal…is it a daily ritual or a one off…for God’s sake …he’s a three year old…diarrhea perhaps…the dog not George!

  12. He is 3 years old and the Pet police are onto him. Yes ice cream CAN kill a dog as can chocolate, but they have to eat a fair amount if it. Also cars, and other dogs and humans CAN kill a dog and a thousand other things but don’t always do so, wouldn’t it be better t explain ( which his parents probably did) that it is not good to give it to the dog. I wonder if Her Majesty has been known to give her dogs ice cream? They were always very well dared for and healthy.

    • Some miserable narcistic people have nothing better to do than whinge and critise. Because they are too useless to get a life. Poor bastards.

    • Our dogs ate Chocolate Easter Eggs. Sniffed them and removed them from a high bench. We found the coloured foils of about 6. Worried, but they did not get sick. People have little to do, if they make hurtful comments about any families.
