Chances are you could be part of the one in six adults in Australia that aren’t getting enough milk and dairy foods in your diet.

A survey by the CSIRO and University of Adelaide found that a whopping 74 per cent of adults are making this choice because they believe it could make them fat or bloated, but don’t actually discuss these concerns with a medical professional.

“The scale of people restricting their diet without medical reason is very concerning in terms of the public health implications, especially for women,” CSIRO behavioural scientist Bella Yantcheva says.

By avoiding milk and dairy products you risk nutritional deficiencies or imbalances, and any underlying health condition could go untreated according to the report published in Public Health Nutrtition.

The survey results suggest that most adults are avoiding the products because of fad diets, celebrity culture, the influence of friends or encouragement by alternative health practitioners.

According to the Australian Dietary Guidelines, most of us aged 60 or older need at least 2.5 to four serves of milk, yoghurt, cheese and/or alternatives a day.

A serve of dairy is equal to 250ml of milk, two slices or 40g of cheese or a 200g tub of yoghurt.

    • Hi Suzanne…. You are going to be busy if you correct every grammatical and spelling mistake on SAS !!! ( but I fully endorse and understand you wanting to do this’). I tried once, and after three, I received a message that I was making too many responses! Keep it up though, because it fills me with pride that there are still some educated amongst us.

The reason people are moving away from dairy products is because they feel better and are healthier without it. “In reality, cow’s milk, especially processed cow’s milk, has been linked to a variety of health problems, including: mucous production, hemoglobin loss, childhood diabetes, heart disease, atherosclerosis, arthritis, kidney stones, mood swings, depression, irritability, ALLERGIES.”

  3. It might be a good idea to remember that animals do not suckle after weaning, nor do they suffer health problems like osteoarthritis, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, mental health problems and more.
    Where do they get the calcium, you might ask? From what they eat! Vegetable matter like grasses, leaves, fruits, nuts and seeds. These foods supply all the necessary nutrients we need!

  4. Did the survey consider if these people adjusted their diet to ensure they were digesting the important nutrients found in dairy from other sources? For example calcium can be sourced from foods other than milk.

    • All nutrients are available from vegetable matter.
      Milk is an acid food. In order to neutralize the acid the body needs to draw calcium from the bones, which in turn could lead to Osteoporosis.
      Now, if a food like milk causes GI irritation its nutrients will not be absorbed. The irritability can lower absorbability of nutrients from other foods for days or even months leading to vitamin and mineral deficiencies and depleted immune system
      Therefore, the allergenicity of a food takes precedence over its theoretical nutritive value
