Kyle Chalmers wins gold in epic final

Kyle Chalmers has just won gold in the 100m freestyle final. It’s a huge win for the 18-year-old who gave it his all from the moment he hit the water.

Australia’s Cameron McEvoy was also in the race and finished 7th overall. Cameron was tipped to win the final, after competing in the event at the London Olympics in 2012.

Today it was all about Kyle though, who couldn’t wipe the smile off his face when he turned around and read the scoreboard.

“It’s amazing!” he said when talking to an Aussie reporter on the pooldeck after the race. “I’m only 18!”

The boys are good friends and being the sportsman he is, Cameron quickly swam over to give Kyle and big hug and say congratulations.

To top it all off, perhaps the best reaction to the win came from Kyle’s Year 12 classmates at his highschool in Adelaide who were watching the race all together.

They all jumped up and down, clapping and cheering on their mate as he swum for the gold and won.

Join us in wishing Kyle – who has been dubbed King Kyle – a huge congratulations for an amazing effort and a great swim!

We’ll keep you up to date with the rest of the Olympic news has it happens over the day.
