Kirk Douglas makes a heartbreaking confession on his birthday

Kirk Douglas is celebrating his 100th birthday today.

It’s a very special day today for legendary actor Kirk Douglas who has turned 100!

While most people would think this is a cause for massive celebration, Kirk has spoken about the reality of old age saying it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

Speaking in an interview, the actor said he often feels lonely having watched most of his closest friends pass away over the years.

“I am now 100 years old. I read about Hollywood, and I don’t know the people. Where is Burt [Lancaster]? Where is Laurence Olivier? They’re all gone. I miss them. I feel lonely,” he said.

It’s a sobering truth for everyone as we age, with many people finding it difficult to cope without the friends and family they had spent most of their lives with.

Of course, Kirk still has a wonderfull family around him, with his son Michael and daughter-in-law Catherine Zeta Jones, as well as his wife Anne who he often refers to as his “soul mate”.

While kicking on for another year is always something to celebrate, it seems the reality of losing those you love most really started to sink in for the younger generation.

“Just read what Kirk Douglas said about feeling lonely as you get older and your friends pass away,” one young fan wrote. “I never really thought about that before. Makes me want to go visit my nana and make sure she’s alright.”

Many baby boomers will already be able to relate to this feeling, with some losing friends and loved ones far too soon.

Can you relate to this feeling? Have you had to deal with the passing of a friend? Are you a fan of Kirk Douglas?
