Karl Stefanovic made headlines yesterday when he made a series of jokes about transgender people on the Today Show.

It happened during a discussion with Channel 9 reporter Christine Ahern who had been mugged by a group of — in her words — “transvestites” in Rio.

“I know that you have gone to see the police about this tranny,” Karl said during the segment.

“We have a confit made up and we know they don’t all look the same. Is that the tranny they are talking about?” he asked as a photograph of Hugo Weaving in character in the film Priscilla Queen of the Desert appeared on screen.

Viewers were outraged and took to social media to berate the television host for his use of an outdated term.

Today, Karl appeared before his audience cap in hand acknowledging he offended a number of viewers and saying he was ignorant to how damaging the word he used was.

“As we all know, I can be a complete tool, right? Well, yesterday I was worse — I was an ignorant tool,” Karl says.

“I pride myself, in my own weird way, of being across things. Yesterday I wasn’t. Yesterday, I got it wrong. I used a word, which I will now say for the last time ever. By using the word ‘tranny’, I offended an awful lot of beautiful and sensitive people. I honestly didn’t know the negative and deeply hurtful impact that word has, not only on member of the LGBTQI community, but on their family and friends,” he continues.

Karl says he spoke with a friend from the LGBTIQ community following the show who told him he has “crossed the line”.

After his apology, Karl went on to address those who had defended the segment saying, “To anyone who found the segment funny, please understand why it was the exact opposite: an ignorant jibe at the expense of a beautiful community already battling against the odds for mainstream acceptance.”

He closed by saying that he has learnt a lesson.

“People, my brothers and sisters in the community who love and respect me, have told me to educate myself. I have started to,” Karl says.

  1. Isn’t it way past time to get over this Political Correctness crap. Maybe focus on something worth your interest.

  2. Wayne Watkins

Breckie , Aussie , sicky , Bricky , tranny , get over it all people , this is Straya where every word almost has a shortened version

  3. Great apology Karl … I love the way you didn’t even let on it was a “Piss-take” and the professionally offended in our community swallowed the lot. Well done!!

    • Nigel Kay

“Professionally Offended” love it and will use it, ain’t it the truth but?

  4. its it funny ,, gee you cant use the tranny word but people can call people with a disability the R word , and think thats ok , oh by the way some transgender people can themselves trannies ,,,

  5. Anne McDonald

I cannot believe that he even had to apologise for what he said, as isnt that what they are. They are transgender and some even call themselves “trannies.” In regards to your brothers and sisters, tell them to get off the minority bandwagon. This is getting ridiculous. I say “KARL, YOU YOU DO NOT HAVE TO APOLOGISE.”

  6. Julie Byrnes

This is taking things way too far. Of course he didn’t need to apologise if people get offended that’s their problem. Remember the old saying
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but names can never hurt me”

  7. Ben Cooper

Bit strange to see how “precious” the Australians have become? Get a life ! – unless someone is being totally offensive, accept a joke for what it is (and for goodness sake, the use of an outdated word, shortened in quintessential Aussie fashion – what is the country coming to?)

well done Karl! your now a consummate “piss taker”. As someone else said you have the public conned with an apology not required. Shame the Politically Correct in this country cannot just get their collective butts onto a ship and find a deserted island somewhere where they can have the civilisation they so strongly desire. God forbid you pass wind in public, what are they going to do ???hang you??

  10. Rob. O'Donnell

in a way he is correct in saying he is a “tool”, but he just bends with the wind which ever way it blows, always has been always will be a fence sitter. lost respect for him ages ago don’t watch nine anymore because he is there!

  11. The bloke is indeed a tool…..completely engulfed in himself just as his co-host is…this “Super Cool” garbage has executed any semblance of personal integrity and moral character….in other words people such as this most surely need to form a search party in pursuit of “REAL” motivation and utterances..
