A new report into ‘Islamophobia, social distance and fear of terrorism in Australia,’ by the University of South Australia’s International Centre for Muslim and non-Muslim Understanding has shown how Australians really feel.

And if you’re less educated, unemployed, older and/or Liberal-leaning, you’re more likely to hold anti-Islam values.

The report investigated how “age, religion, place of residence, employment status and political views affect the likelihood that someone is Islamophobic, feels socially distant from Muslims, or is worried about a terrorist attack”.

A survey of 1000 people found 70 per cent of Australians had low levels of Islamophobia, 20 per cent were undecided and 10 per cent were classed as “highly Islamophobic”, with Islamophobia defined as “negative and hostile attitudes towards Islam and Muslims”, reports Huffington Post.

Respondents recorded their views on the below on a scale of 1-5:

  • 17 per cent of respondents agreed with the statement “just to be safe it is important to stay away from places where Muslims could be”
  • Almost seven percent would not feel comfortable talking to a Muslim
  • Almost a quarter would “support any policy that will stop the building of a new mosque”
  • 14 per cent “would avoid going to places where Muslims would be”

The highest levels of Islamophobic respondents were reported in NSW and Queensland, and Australia-wide those in the 65-74 bracket had the highest levels of Islamophobia, while those in the 25-34 age group had the lowest.

If a respondent hadn’t completed year 12, they were fives times more likely to be Islamophobic compared to people who had university degrees.

And if you have a job, you’re less likely than people who are unemployed to hold Islamophobic views.

Greens supporters were the least Islamophobic, while 3.2 per cent of Liberal supporters and 0.9 per cent of Labor supporters were among the most scared of muslims.

“Respondents with political affiliations with the Liberal and Country parties have significantly higher levels of Islamophobia than those with political affiliations with the centre-left Labor Party. The Greens voters tend to have the lowest Islamophobia score,” the report’s authors wrote.

“There are pockets of prejudice and anxiety directed towards Muslims, for example among the aged and those facing financial insecurity. But the great majority of Australians in all states and regions are comfortable to live alongside Australian Muslims,” the report concluded.

Tell us, do you think these survey results reflect your views? Would you consider yourself to be Islamophobic?

  1. Personally. Take b…. Islam back to where it came from and all their followers. It’s a religion which is full of corupt upstarts for leaders for the most part. Silly robes in order to hide face and body and whatever else underneath. Demand we should join them. For what? Kill one another?

      • Ree, yes that is what is needed. ALL MOSLEM/ISLAMIC/MOHAMMEDINS ETC., sent away from Christian or Budhist or other religions around the globe. Moslems do not and will not integrate, they, some of them, think the world is flat, and they obey their Imams in their Mosques totally. They will kill if told to do so. Most religions can live together in harmony , but not all the time as history has shown us. But we know from History and today that Moslems are intent on killing off non believers of Islam, want Sharia Law over local Law, which has taken centuries to build, so, what else can you suggest.? You sound like a young woman and I can understand your hopes for the future, but never trust or believe a moslem for your own sake. They have proven world wide they cannot be trusted

        • Paula .. You are aware, are you not, that there are people who follow the Muslim faith who have not originated from the Middle East, do not follow Sharia law, or any of the other of the things that you ridiculously spout. As I read the comments regarding this topic I feel so ashamed to be Australian. I worked one on one with these people, I have attended social gatherings with them & I can assure you that the vast majority are as good, if not better, than a lot of so called dinky di Australians that I know of. Please don’t tell me that you know any Muslims personally because I would not believe it. You obviously only know what the media tells you, & of course that must be the truth. I am a true blue Aussie who loves her country but firmly believes we all have more than enough to be generous to people who have nothing & who would love to be productive & settle in a country where there is peace.

    • Where the silly religion originated. Iran and Arabic nations mostly. Tgey did not iriginate in European countries, hence they terrorise them in order to convert them, or else😠😠😠- guess Altman you like them in your midst! I have had Muslim friends in the past but would rather they stay in Islamaohobic countries. If you want to join them by all means do. Just my personal feelings. We don’t wear silly scarves and black flowing robes with stuff all over your face. Unless riding a motorbike 😂😂😂😂👻👀👎

      • Where are the “Islamaohobic countries” you wish to banish them to? And you do realise that people of the Muslim faith have been in Australia since we have been here? And if research is correct, even before we were here? I see that the Reclaim Australia movement cover their faces and drape the Australian flag over themselves – that is truly a disgrace!

        • I think the first people to discover Australia were the Dutch. Others may have touched Australian shores, i.e locals, such as Indonesians and other Islander peoples, but were not recorded, and a large proportion of Indonesia is moslem, but I am not sure how long Islam has been practised there.

          • Asian Muslims trade with northern Australian aborigines in theb1600s and in the mid 1800s approximately 3000 Muslim camel drivers came to Australia. Who did you think the Ghan train was named after? It’s named after those afghani camel drivers.

          • Paula .. the first people to discover Australia were our aborigines. Not trying to be pedantic, just righting an incorrect statement that you have made.

        • Shows just how little you know about Reclaim Australia!! It is their opposition who cover their faces and commit violent acts when they protest against Reclaim after infiltrating their rallies. I suppose you also think it was Reclaim members who burnt the Australian flag! Please don’t be so gullible and get your facts right befor spreading false rumours. Surely you don’t believe everything the media tells you. Wake up !

          • Not many of us are interested in knowing more about Reclaim Australia .. but I would like to know, what exactly are we reclaiming and from who?

        • You do realize the 1st terrorist attack on Australian soil was in the 1800’s by 2 Afghans who tried to blow up a train the explosives failed to detonate so they then fired at it with rifles, they were caught & hanged

          • I think you’ll find the “first terrorist attack” on what is currently known as Australian soil occurred in the last quarter of the 18the Century ( the 1700’s) and was committed by very Christian European settlers/invaders.

      • Is that you riding the horse Ann? Is it a Arab?

    • Indonesia is the biggest Muslim country in the world 😱 if you think they are going anywhere, you have rocks in your head

    • After being in Australia for over 150 years, many Muslims are 3rd and 4th generation Aussies. Where would you like them sent to

    • Sue. With what is going on. I want them to go back to the origins of their religion! Where they can feel comfortable running around in prehistoric garb. Their choice to follow a foreign religion. With the radicalisation of this religion it is MY OPINION for all concerned they follow their religion in countries however far and long ago it originated. I say this because their RELIGION expects them to convert all to Islam. Bloody awful way to do it. We don’t for the mist part want to pray upended like they do have hideous clerks to follow or run around covering ourselves up. Suffrerjets changed that for us women many years ago.

    • sorry but those priests in churches are not dressed in mini skirts and knee high boots, they have very outdated robes and some even have funny hats, sorry but they all dress up in all religeons

    • Ann Cleveland-Dunn would you like to be sent back to where your ancestors came from, somewhere you have no connection with? Or do you consider yourself an Aussie. You’re talking about people who have done nothing wrong, who can’t be held responsible for the actions of a few nut cases. Should all Irish be sent back to Ireland because one Irish person commits a crime? Your fear and paranoia are taking over your common sense

    • Ann Cleveland-Dunn, I’m sorry, but you are exhibiting all the elements that the studies confirmed about Islamophobes. Do you mean that you would like Muslims to stay in Islam-friendly countries? As you have stated that you would rather them stay in countries that will not tolerate their culture or religion. Sending all the World’s Muslims to ‘Iran and Arabic nations’ is ludicrous. There are millions of Muslims in Indonesia, Malaysia, India, and other Eastern countries, quite apart from any who have emigrated to Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and NZ. Do you really suggest that they all relocate to Iran and the Arab Emirates? Please don’t show your ignorance, educate yourself, travel, broaden your mind, then you may be able to give an informed opinion.

    • When I lived in Iran a woman in a chador got it caught by a car driving by, off came the chador, and underneath was a micro mini and an almost non existent top. That was in the days of the Shah. When I revisited Iran a few years ago, all women had to be covered, against their will, and our Iranian (male) guide said that if not, they would be beaten. His feelings were that the chador was an insult to Iranian men, …..it says that Iranian men cannot control themselves! All the Iranians I have met, and that’s a lot, have been gentle, caring, people. Iran is taking in thousands of refugees. Please do not tar every Moslem with the same brush as extremists and brainwashed converts to ISIS.

  3. I agree, I come in here and I see people who I know who vote to the left, they are all tolerant with the exception of a couple, who shock me. I am of the opinion that we need to try get along with ALL Australians. Muslims are doing not a damn thing to me, so why should I go out there on a crusade to get rid of them? it is just nastiness

    • Fully agree with you .. and the word ‘nastiness’ says it all.

    • and idiots who vote to the right ( not all, just the racist element )are only concerned with their own petty wants and needs and have no consideration or thought for how their actions hurt others and hurt this country. It really is shameful to see, it would be almost criminal if it was not so pathetic

    • Graeme people to the left are not the reclaim mob out on the street in masks marching..that is the far right

    • Obviously, there are people all across the spectrum who are “radical” in some form or another. Those who are not open to fair and open mindedness to the views of others are the types I refer to.

    • Ironic that the Reclaim mob are marching against Muslims and the fact that they cover their faces, while they all have their faces covered by our flag

    • Open mindedness racism is narrow and shallow mindedness. Hitler who believed in the supreme German race killed millions because he was able to manipulate the poor and the down trodden blaming others for there problems. When I see a racist I see a person who is only capable of blaming others this then justifies all to them. They don’t have to think outside the box or look at the real problems.

      • Grrrrr Libbi!! It is NOT Reclaim members covering their faces. It is their leftist opposition. Unfortunately some media outlets made the same mistake as you have.

      • It is not racism, being anti muslim is no more racist than being anti catholic, which I am.

    • So now I am “labelled” a racist for making a broad comment (questioning the way these reports are put together) and you people think that you are any better than the the one’s of whom you refer?

    • that is the whole point Graeme, we don’t like judging anyone including you and can’t understand why people would to judge others who do not have the same belief system as them..tolerance is the key

    • If you read/watch world news not all people are tolerant, there are people out there hell bent on destruction of our way of life.

    • Of course not all people are tolerant, that’s the problem. People being killed because someone with a bad attitude punches them when they’re on a night out, people being threatened and abused on the roads because some-one doesn’t like the way they drive. There are intolerant people everywhere, all we can do is control our own behaviour and not add to the problem.

  7. I vote to the left but am probably sitting dead center, I just get gobsmacked by some of the malicious comments, I am a white Aussie and I am happy to give everyone a fair go, no matter where their country of origin or their religion is

  8. If people lived their own lives and stop trying to dictate how other should live, the world might be a happier place

    • I quite agree David, does that include Islam, who want Sharia Law, Infidels, that me as a Christian, killed, and “No Go” areas in big cities world wide, special attention paid to their religious needs at the expense of indigenous people who have welcomed them?

      • You are confusing ordinary Muslims with extremists. The average Muslim just wants to live their lives in peace.

  9. muslims are not a race of people, it is a religious belief that is prevalent in many countries, including China and asia, so if you claim to hate all muslims you are hating a big percentage of the world population, get over it, it’s just another fantasy just like christianity.

  10. The inference in this article is that is mostly the uneducated that have Islamophobia; I disagree. It has nothing to do with being in the lower socio economic sphere but common sense. They have been shown to kill any level of society so those who do not fear are apathetic.
