Helen looks a bit ‘mother of the bride’ – what do you think? Hit or miss 224

Helen Mirren usually makes the headlines for her excellent dress sense, but one of her latest two appearances has left some fashion watchers thinking she looked a little mother of the bride. Hit or miss? What do you think? We’re not sure.

The 70-year-old actress rocked it in an elegant black dress for the BFI London Film Festival photocall for her new movie Trumbo with co-stars Bryan Cranston and John Goodman. No problems there – stunning in anyone’s book.

However, she chose a pale-pink button-up A-line dress for the screening of Trumbo.

The Daily Mail, reports the actress teamed it up with a matching pink fascinator, sparkling silver clutch and a pair of fierce pink heels with diamante straps.

That newspaper liked the ensemble, but we’re not so sure. For us, it had a slight “mother-of-the bride” feeling about it.

Directed by Jay Roach, Trumbo also stars Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston as Oscar-winning Hollywood film-maker Dalton Trumbo, who was blacklisted for his political beliefs in communism in 1947.

Helen plays the role of gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.

What do you think? Does she look pretty in pink or should she stick to black and white?

  1. I think it’s rude to ask such a question with regards anothers looks. The woman can, and does wear what she darned well chooses to wear, and it’s time we all grew up a bit and stopped passing judgements as to if they ‘meet standard’ or not in our eyes. Enough of this please Starts at 60 writers.

    • Don’t wish to cause upset Anne. I enjoy the people and the debate on this site and am grateful for the effort put in by Admin. By considerately speaking up, we can help shape ‘our’ site.

    • I agree. One minute you’re urging us to stick together – next minute you’re urging everyone to nitpick! Butt out please Starts at 60 !

  2. Beautiful always but she could have ditched the hat thingy

    • Without it, the coat-dress she’s wearing would have been regarded as the plain design that it is, the hat, strange as such hat fashions are at the moment, is part and parcel of the whole, sets it off.

  3. The Lady has style ALWAYS! Stop the criticism starts at 60.
You are always telling us older ladies to believe in our own style. You can’t have it both ways.

    • Wow, that was quick Starts at 60. This was the first time I have been critical of your attitude. Just hate this tall poppy knock the celebs down thing, she is a great representative for us older ladies.
Have to tell you though, I generally love Starts at 60. Find your articles so informative and often refer them on. For example the one yesterday referring to Cuba. Have a son travelling there next month and was able to email him immediately with your info. Also love the jokes.
You have become an integral part of my day. Thankyou.

    • Lynda Lea that’s fine and you’re very entitled to let us know if you feel we have overstepped the line – we will listen to you! 🙂 thanks!

  4. Looks good to me! She is seventy for crying out loud and is British so funny hats are mandatory !

    • I’m pretty certain she’s an Aussie. her first movie was ‘Age of consent” shot here on the great barrier reef. correct me if i’m wrong.

    • Sadly she is certainly not an Aussie – she is English. Her father was Russian, her mother English, she was born in London. She is one of my favourite actors. She looks great whatever she wears but I agree with those who say clothes are not the measure of anyone.

  5. As long as she feels comfortable in what she is wearing, I love her for her acting, her clothes make not a jot of difference

  6. I must be on the wrong site, I think. Surely this site’s posts can rise above those of the immature drooling over what “stars” are wearing/doing. As an older woman my opinion, if it counts, is that Ms Mirren is an incredible actress and wonderful woman and if she wore a potato sack she would still look great.

    • I couldn’t agree more. Once again this site has tried to stir up controversy about such ridiculous non- events. She looks sensational and if she only ever wore black we’d soon get an article on how dull and boring she is. I’m 68 and wear outrageous colours BECAUSE I CAN!

    • Meg Craven You go, girl! I am pretty conservative with my clothes, always have been, but I will defend anyone’s right to wear what they want (bikinis at the supermarket regardless of age an exception) and not be criticised for it or commented negatively about.

    • no, she wouldn’t look great in a potato sack! she would still be a great actress but would not look great. she looks younger with lighter colours and less dramatic make-up. ladies, live with it. looks matter. it is built into our genetics.

black makes her look haggard. an actress gets roles depending on how she looks.

if we can talk about how great john goodman looks (plus healthier) then we can talk about what kind of clothes are more attractive on helen mirran.

just take a look at ALL the you tube videos on make-up for older women. personally i like seeing what looks good on women over 60. i used to wear all black. at some point i looked dumpy and frumpy.

we get older. no need to dress like a nun or a 30-something.
