Hope turns to pride for brave school principal

A group of school students and staff have showed just how much they admire and love their brave principal in a touching YouTube clip they made after she told them she had cancer.

Wenona school principal Briony Scott assured the students and staff when she revealed she had lung cancer in a letter that she was “full to the brim of hope”.

In the video the schoolgirls and staff dance and lip-sync to the song Brave by Sara Bareilles. They also thank Dr Scott for being an amazing leader who had taught them to tackle obstacles head on.

Posting a link to the video on Twitter, the obviously deeply touched principal wrote: “Why be a principal? In 2014, we talked about being brave. All year. In 2015, the students reminded me of all they’d learnt. This is why. All driven by young people who daily defy stereotypes imposed by others. Impossible to be more proud!!”

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Dr Scott, who is married to ABC managing director Mark Scott, has been head of the private north shore Sydney girls’ school since 2011.

She told staff, students and parents she had been diagnosed with lung cancer and required immediate treatment in a letter. The disease came as even more of a shock because the popular principal had never smoked.

“As I take extended personal leave, my greatest concern is for the girls and how they make sense of this news,” she said. “Our girls know how to be strong and brave, and I am confident they will make me proud in the months ahead.”

Dr Scott hopes to return to her duties in early 2016.

What do you make of this beautiful tribute? Didn’t the girls do a great job?
