Hillary for first woman President

Could we see a female American President in our lifetime? Hillary Clinton could be our best shot at it, and has put her hand up overnight to take the Democrat’s nomination for the seat. A woman in the seat of the most powerful person in the world– what an inspiring and somewhat unremarkable thing for today’s generation, yet it seemed impossible a decade or two ago.

“I’m running for president,” Hillary Clinton said in her campaign release video that went live online just hours ago. It follows two years of speculation by world pundits over whether she would step up again to the Democratic race. And the video makes a lot of statements. It shows gay couples, retirees, women and families – they’re where she deems her best votes will come from, if you read from the pictures. A modern, woman president, prepared to hit the road and grow the faith of Americans.

“Everyday Americans need a champion. And I want to be that champion,” Mrs Clinton said. “So I’m hitting the road to earn your vote — because it’s your time. And I hope you’ll join me on this journey”.

So far it appears the competition for the Democrat candidacy will be very limited. Barack Obama is at the end of his two-term limit so he cannot contest as he did last time with a toughly fought battle into which both candidates for democratic leadership poured donors funds. This could be the right timing for America to have a woman as one of the major candidates for President, for the first time in history.

But the big question on everyone’s lips is how “in touch” with the American democratic population is Hillary given her years of living as the wife of a president. And not just any president, but the man known worldwide for the creation of the economic boom that lasted 115 months, created 22 million jobs and allowed Americans to enjoy their highest homeownership rates in history – Bill Clinton. Perhaps we remember him better for his scandals, but there is no doubting Mrs Clinton’s pedigree going into the race.

At 67 years old, with one failed leadership bid behind her, she is well groomed for the role of championing the everyday person, the baby boomer (of which she can call herself one), and the women of the nation, who will be highly-sought-after voters in this race.

It is believed she is looking to raise up to $2.5 billion in funds from Democrat supporters to fight her long campaign to the November 8 2016 election, that sits more than 18 months away.

Hillary Clinton has chosen an interesting way to make herself look connected and authentic to her community with her launch video. She has kicked the video off with 90 seconds of stories about other people who are “about to start something new”. A family moving house to a better area for their child to start kindergarten, a mother going back to work, a gay couple planning their marriage, two men starting their own business, a retiree starting retirement and a woman looking for a job.

Then she steps into the frame of a suburban lifestyle and says “I’m getting ready to do something too. I’m running for president”.
