Anyone who has been to Melbourne or lives there will know that the public transport system is good but could be better, and today you should be screaming ‘hallelujah’ as plans to create an underground train tunnel have just been confirmed.

A brand new, multi-billion dollar Metro Rail tunnel will be built under Swanston Street, confirms the Victorian Government.

Nine kilometres of underground rail tunnels will connect five new underground stations: Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain, making transit a breeze for the thousands of commuters in the Victorian capital.

So when can we expect this landmark development? Major construction is due to commence in 2018 and finish in 2026, reports ABC News.

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews told 774 ABC Melbourne “[The government] have decided that the Swanston Street alignment is the most cost-effective and allows you to deliver the project not at a depth of 40 metres but at a depth of around 10”.

“It means we will go over the City Loop and over the CityLink tunnels”.

As is usual in major construction projects, there will be disruptions on Swanston Street, a busy hub in Melbourne.

“There’ll be some years where Swanston Street will be significantly disrupted and we’ll have to put alternative tram routes in place,” Premier Andrews said.

Tell us today, do you think that this is a great idea for Melbourne? Or are you worried about the disruptions and noise in the CBD?

  1. Some inconvenience by closing swanston street is an understatement , the major tram and bike routes closed for a few years , typical Australian way of doing things , elsewhere tunnels are built and you don’t even know about them , it will be good but another ten years to go . Almost obsolete before it us built , still better than another absurd motorway

  2. Was In Tokyo last year the streets are empty compared to ours every one travels under ground fantastic news for Melbourne…..

  3. Sorry but the East West Link is more important to this City, Labour wasting money again while in office !!!

  4. Stop whinging all you know alls. When this is ready you will be chaffing at the neck to use it. Progression is a way of life, get with it.

  5. Ripping up Swanson St Daniel your an idiot of the highest rank wasting money giving it away $640 million, the East West Link should have been built to get rid of traffic gridlock,we don’t all live in the CBD & tradies & like people they need to be able to get all over Melb,if Building stops Melbourne stops good move Daniel,I will be laughing when it falls in a heap, saying I told you so blind Billie can see it…

  6. Cancelling the east west link was a disaster to commuters. The new project is being placed just under the city. How many pipes, basements etc.also waterways are in this area.? It sounds disastrous and I have nothing but pity for the traders, as people will choose to boycott the city rather than all the detours.

  7. Wouldn’t get too excited. The Party changes, so do the rules. Look at “Desalination.” ?? Go with the flow..(Y) London has 16 floors, ( layers,) of “Underground,!!” (MIND BOGGLING!!.).. I have been 16 floors below and taken the lift up to ground level!!..Still 16 million people walking around. Hahaha 🙂 CHEERS.. 🙂

  8. Wonder where the money will come from. Typical of Labor. We have a desal plant that has never been used but must be paid for. Dan has torn up the much needed East-West contract at over $6 billion. Scrapped the proposal of a train to the airport.

  9. I do not live in Melbourne , but I have a lot of experience of underground trains.
I was so pleased to hear at last we have someone that can look into the future.
Underground trains are what all states need in Australia.
All people think of is Roads because that’s the way they are brought up.
In the future what do you do build more wider roads?

Underground trains will move more people in a quicker time than any road system.
You can always put extra carriages on a train that does not cost much.
    Cheaper than more wider Roads.
Sure it will take time to build, but it is there forever.
No more sitting in queues of traffic for hours on end.
For those that wanted the east west link.
Your State went to the election on this and you did not want it, so such it up and move on.
