Does Tony Abbott have killing on his mind? 77

Was it a Freudian slip or is the Prime Minister just really tired of talking about boats and people smugglers?

As he faced questions about the alleged cash payments to people smugglers, Tony Abbott stumbled a little, creating hilarity in parliament but making some wonder whether there’s something more to it. Here’s how it went:

Opposition Immigration Spokesman Richard Marles: “When will the prime minister send a clear and unambiguous message to people smugglers that Australian vessels are not floating ATMs?”

Mr Abbott:  “They never did a single Turnbull!”

There was a tiny pause.

Mr Abbott: “Turn back.”

Labor voice over the ensuing laughter and shouts: “Stop the Malcolms!”

Madam Speaker  tried to regain order.

Tony Burke, the Opposition manager of business:  “He’s the one who did a Turnbull!”

Ms Bishop: “Don’t try my patience!”

This time of year, approaching the end of the winter sitting of parliament, is known as the “Killing Season”, as it is traditionally when ambitious pollies make a grab for leadership.

Is that what was on the Prime Minister’s mind?

Mr Abbott defeated Mr Turnbull for the leadership of the Liberal Party in 2009.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Mr Turnbull seemed unfazed by the incident and merely glanced up from his smartphone with a smile.

Do you think Tony Abbott should be fearful of a leadership spill?

  1. It sounds to me like Turnbull is worrying him and is on his mind, I can understand why they laughed 🙂

  2. Given the appalling job he’s doing, he should be worried…We need a PM, not a bumbling buffoon…Here’s hoping…

  3. Who ever is running starts at sixty,???????????

    • why? if is true and by the sounds of it it is..why not report it? what is your problems with reporting the truth?

    • Rozy.I worked out what you did for work, I’m pretty sure you were a speed hump, Signed. A Soul.

    • that is nasty and uncalled for Alex..rozzy was not rude to you, if you have a problem with this website , you have 2 them..or don’t come here

    • Maybe Abbott could adopt George W’s maxim, “They misunderestimated me…” By the way, Abbott did not literally defeat Turnbull, Turnbull had the casting vote and elected to fall on his own sword. Too liberal for the ‘Liberals.’.

      • If Turnbull voted for himself and Abbott for himself resulting in Abbott winning by one vote its not rocket science to workout that Abbott voted himself into the position of leader of the Liberal Party and hence PM. Therefore Abbott is only PM because he voted himself into the job.

    • It was funny, Alex! Regardless of which side you voted for! It was worth posting for a laugh, and why doesn’t “whoever is running this page” ban you for flaming?

    • Never personal Alex but I thought the caption read, “Does Tony Abbott have killing on his mind?”
